Definition
Under general supervision, perform computer operations; coordinate between Information Systems and other clients for the installation of PC applications, data base access and a first point of contact for problem resolution.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This is the journey level classification in the series and is distinguished by the incumbent's ability to perform all of the duties and responsibilities of the entry-level classification with minimal direction and supervision. Incumbents in this class may be advanced to the advanced journey level upon meeting the requirements of that classification, completing a minimum of two years of satisfactory performance as Computer Support Specialist II, in a full-time position or equivalent service, with the City of Redding, and upon the recommendation of the Department Director.
Examples of Duties
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties. Not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each individual in the classification.
1. Provide instruction in authorized software applications in a group, or individual basis and provide training, consulting, and technical assistance.
Measures: Users understand the training, instructions received and can apply knowledge in a practical way.
2. Troubleshoot software problems as necessary and perform new product analysis on software.
Measures: Differentiates between user errors and software errors, and resolves promptly as appropriate.
3. Provide Help Desk support to clients.
Measures: Answers calls to the Help Desk in a friendly and helpful manner with appropriate information.
4. Investigate new software applications which might assist and enhance user productivity.
Measures: Ensures that software supports hardware compatibility and user's requirements.
Measures: Timely and efficient installation of application software.
7. Perform computer operations, including but not limited to: perform data entry; perform backup operations; print and distribute reports; monitor disk usage; troubleshoot and respond to questions/problems from users; install Program Temporary Fixes (PTFs); perform routine maintenance and cleaning of computer hardware; compile and maintain procedures; and maintain logs and reports.
Measures: Shift operations performed with interval accuracy and minimal interruption of service. Accuracy and timeliness. Backup operations are performed as scheduled and in a safe, secure and accurate manner. Periodically review/purges old and unused files/programs. Procedures, logs and reports are kept up-to-date. User downtime is minimal.
8. Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the job classification.
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge of:
Computer system operations, equipment and applications; word processing techniques and applications; electronic spreadsheets; basic accounting procedures and principles; interfacing applications; data base; and comprehension of structured programs for usage and modification; methods of automating manual office systems; principles and methods of training users on microcomputers and the client main computer system.
Ability to:
Interact effectively with the clients and employees. Oversee the work of lower level employees; operate computer; enter data quickly and accurately; provide effective and timely Help Desk support; solve software problems in a prompt and effective manner.
Education:
Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying; typical experience would include an Associate of Arts degree from an accredited college, or equivalent experience in Computer Science or related field.
Experience:
Typical experience would include three years of progressively responsible relevant experience with mainframe/midrange and personal computers software usage, and a basic understanding of structured programming language and one year of experience in a lead capacity..
