What You Will Do  

This role, the Mechanical Installation Foreman, reports to the Grid Manager. This role has no direct report. You will be a part of the OSP Implementation team. The OSP Implementation team is responsible for on-site construction, contractor management, and implementation of Ocado’s state of art Customer Fulfillment Centers (CFCs).

Your role in the team is to:

  • Be responsible for the successful installation of the grid structure and ancillary hardware on time and to quality standards
  • Communicate joint working rules with other teams, e.g., Clients contractors and other Ocado contractors
  • Ensure trade contractors are trained to perform the work (e.g., grid test build) and follow appropriate quality assurance processes, to ensure the trades adherence to the required component and installed part tolerances for the steel and aluminum structure that forms the grid
  • Collaborate with grid trade contractors on day to day look ahead, morning minutes, build rates, educate them on the Grid QA documentation process and that they understand the checking of grid materials pre-install
  • Help to identify and coordinate applicable engineering change requests and participate in risk identification and mitigation, anticipating engineering challenges
  • Guide the local installer on how to use the grid installation manuals with Ocado preferred methods/best practices and grid quality install checks 
  • Help produce / update and agree with the relevant Ocado HSE Risk Assessments
  • Perform a documented handover process to the Engineering Project Manager for the implementation and handover phase
  • Help to ensure that Ocado complies with Health and Safety best practices (e.g. “Working at Height,” “Grid access control”) in the Global industry and OSHA requirements
  • Review the design pack and convert to a practical technical Installation plan
  • Record and problem solve potential grid non-conformance as the works progress and ensure prescribed testing and commissioning is undertaken and that all drawings/test certificates / as-builts are retained for the Clients handover
  • Work with existing Ocado HQ to continue build rate documentation in line with the existing process, keep recording up to date and accurate

Day-to-day responsibilities could include:

  • Communicate Grid Manager’s logistic management plan to all parties effectively and maintain the plan as site constraint change 
  • At the start, on-site, collaborate with the Ocado site leader to establish the overall site layout, i.e., contractor trailer locations, the establishment of lay-down areas, placement of materials storage cages, etc. and relay it to the general contractor to ensure a fully integrated Logistics plan
  • Lead, develop, maintain, and update the inventory management register and collaborate with the Grid Installation Manager and Project Coordinator to ensure records/ledgers of all materials held on site are updated every 24 hours
  • Work with Grid Manager to ensure a seamless delivery process and materials arrival to site process; including all off-loading, site lifting plans, large tool (JIG) delivery set up, and the trade contractor JHA approvals
  • Help run daily coordination and logistics management for Grid and Peripheral parts deliveries, which include significant quantities of aluminum and steel legs, coordinating safe and efficient off-loading and movement into the chamber, avoiding double handling
  • Attend weekly last planner meetings and inform the team of material needs in advance of construction operations, escalate shortages promptly with mitigation measures, record client or contractor delay and contribute to daily site diary
  • Help to undertake integrated activity coordination with other team members delivering interfacing trade packages, e.g., Grid Installation, Peripheral Installation, Conveying and Automation
  • Assist the grid manager in swiftly reporting any missing items, or items not meeting the project specification and subsequently implement quarantine arrangements and materials return

Who You Are

To qualify for this position, you should meet the following requirements:

   Minimum

  • 3-5 years of experience on mechanical installation of VNA, pallet racking, or AS/RS systems
  • Engineering Graduate or time served tradesperson (3-5 years experience)
  • Experience acting as the project technical lead
  • Solid understanding of OSHA standards and processes is essential
  • Experience with construction projects involving structural steel, AS/RS, or racking in manufacturing, automotive, airports, FMCG distribution, or similar fields in the MHE industry
  • Technical experience in structural building, storage racking, and in construction environments
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel 
  • Ability to monitor, report and communicate progress/barriers with a variety of stakeholders, both in verbal and written form

  Preferred (in addition to minimum)

  • OSHA 10 Certification
  • Aptitude to debate technical detail with MHE vendors, and ensure compliance to Ocado Engineering standards
  • Ability to design & propose alternative solutions when faced with project barriers 
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical audiences
  • Ability to navigate common drawing packages (e.g., Autocad)

Location 

Work will typically be on one of 20 sites anywhere in the USA for 6-12 month periods, moving to another site on completion. Initial on-boarding of 1-3 months is likely to take place in the UK or existing OSP site.
