What are the responsibilities and job description for the Auditor position at Ofc of the Inspector General?
This position is located at the District of Columbia's, Office of the Inspector General (OIG), Audit Unit. The OIG is responsible for conducting independent financial and performance audits, inspections, evaluations, and investigations of District of Columbia government programs and operations.
Duties and Responsibilities
Independently plans and carries out assignments in conformance with accepted auditing practices. Adheres to instructions, policies, and guidelines in exercising judgment to resolve commonly encountered work problems and deviations. Chooses a course of action from many alternatives in planning an approach, gathering data, and presenting findings depending on the nature and extent of problems encountered.
Decide how to approach each assignment or assignment phase based on the information available and the requirements of applicable guidelines. Identify and analyze criteria and conditions related to the District's systems, functions, and controls. Brings controversial information or findings to the supervisor's attention for direction. Uses judgment to adapt guidelines to specific cases or problems and/or to interpret a large number of varied data sets, policies and regulations.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Education
Degree: accounting, auditing, or a degree, including auditing courses in a related field such as business administration, finance, or public administration that included or was supplemented by 24 semester hours in accounting. The 24 hours may include up to 6 hours of credit in business law.
OIG’s desired applicants have general experience in solving organizational management problems to promote efficiency , preparing written products including reports, issuing findings and recommendations to enhance organizational efficiency, and assessing internal controls in government programs and agencies and experience in applying generally accepted Government Auditing Standards (GAGAS). The OIG prefers applicants with a professional knowledge of accounting and auditing concepts, principles, and methods, knowledge of the District of Columbia's business practices pertaining to accounting systems for payroll, purchases, maintenance, sales, and services, and knowledge of District of Columbia programs and its governing statutes, regulations, and practices sufficient to perform audit assignments using generally accepted Government auditing methods and techniques.
Work Environment
The work is performed in an office environment. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.
