Duties & Responsibilities
In collaboration with the Production Lead Operator, the Banding Line Operator sets up, operates, maintains and monitors the final banding and packing of the rolled steel in accordance with special packaging instructions per MIS to prepare the material for the final customer.
Specific Duties

- Follow Safe Working Procedures (SWP’s) for the production department
- Report all safety issues and accidents to the Production Supervisor and Maintenance Supervisor
- Ensure housekeeping and 5S standards are maintained in the assigned work area and surrounding areas
Operations/Quality
- Read production schedules and work orders to plan the efficient sequence of operations, apply knowledge of physical properties of slit materials
- Start conveyors to load steel coils and/or signal crane operators to move coils to the required position
- Position steel coils on the conveyor, using crane, chain hoists or grabs
- Clean and lubricate conveyor and banding gun
- Measure completed slit coils to verify conformance to specifications, using micrometers, gauges, calipers, templates, or rulers
- Position, align, and secure guides, stops, holding blocks, or other fixtures to secure and direct the finished product, using hand tools and measuring devices
- Set up and construct the in-line separator shafts with the appropriate separator blades to ensure the correct spacing and separation of the slit strips
- Place completed steel coils on conveyors, using crane, chain hoists or grabs, or signal crane operators to transport them to subsequent stations
- Examine finished product to ensure that the product conforms to specifications, utilizing knowledge and experience and placing and suspect coils on hold for quality control/inspection
- Signal crane operators to deposit finished steel coils in storage areas
- Print and attach slitting identification tags on finished product for subsequent processing and traceability
- Report maintenance job orders as necessary
- Instruct new workers in banding set up and operation
Qualifications/Training
- Education: Completion of High School Diploma or GED
- Experience Preferences:
- Prefer 1-3 years’ experience in a manufacturing environment preferably in steel/metal manufacturing
- Prefer basic knowledge of production and processing of cold rolled steel (but NOT required)
- Prefer prior crane operation experience
- Communicates Effectively: Clear Interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills
Physical Requirements:
- Requires pushing, pulling, reaching, standing, walking, gripping and bending
- High mental and visual effort required
- Work involves considerable bending and twisting
- Able and willing to work overtime when required – up to 12 hours a day / 7 days a week
Safety / Hazards:
- Steel toed shoes always required in production area due to physical hazards from moving equipment, machine parts and product
- ANSI Z87.1 standard safety glasses required in production area due to dust, oils and debris
- May be Exposed to flying objects such as scrap metal and sparks
- Exposed to moderate cuts and bruises
- Exposed to significant temperature changes in the facility – (heat in the summer / cold in the winter)
