Summary:

The Financial Controller – Forwarding is responsible for the month-end close process for the freight forwarding business, ensuring all revenue and expense accruals are recorded in the appropriate period. This role will produce all monthly financial reports, complete budget to actual variance analysis, prepare the annual budget for the freight forwarding business, and assist in the annual audit process

Duties and Responsibilities:


Own the general ledger and accounting function for the Freight Forwarding business

  • Collaborate with the Operations Controller to ensure all revenue is recorded by month-end close deadline, and ensure all revenue is accrued in the appropriate period.
  • Ensure all costs are appropriately accrued for each shipment/file in the appropriate period.
  • Coordinate with operations to ensure all fixed asset accounting is appropriately recorded
  • Collaborate with various branches to understand financial results through the moth and at month-end.
  • Ensure all general ledger activity is appropriately recorded in the system of record to the appropriate reporting segments so meaningful analysis can be performed
  • Collaborate with the Consolidation and Intercompany Analyst to ensure all intercompany entries are appropriately recorded
  • Working closely with the Senior G/L Accountant to understand cost allocations and how they will impact the Freight Forwarding business during both the budgeting and month-end processes.
  • Prepare monthly general ledger reconciliations throughout the month-end close process to validate financial accuracy.

Reporting & financial analysis for the Freight Forwarding business

  • Prepare and generate monthly financial statements and management reports for the Freight Forwarding business.
  • Effectively communicate budget to actual variances to operations and leadership
  • Monitor results throughout the month to give real-time insights to operations and leadership on where results are expected to land for the month.
  • Develop and maintain KPI metrics that are regularly reported to operations and leadership for the Freight Forwarding business.

Budget and Reforecast

  • Collaborate with operations and Freight Forwarding leadership team to develop the annual budget
  • Collaborate with operations and Freight Forwarding leadership to work through reforecast cycles as determined by the finance organization.
  • Enter all budget and reforecast information into the Adaptive planning tool.
  • Produce all reporting for the Freight Forwarding business related to the budgeting and reforecast process, and effectively communicate risks and opportunities to the plan throughout the year.

Continuous Improvement Projects

  • Work collaboratively with the Controllership group to optimize the month-end close, budgeting, and reporting processes.
  • Support business initiatives and improvement projects as they arise

  • Proven ability to effectively plan, organize and complete multiple complex activities, priorities and assignments on a timely basis
  • Strong technical research, solid analytical ability and the capability to effectively evaluate and implement solutions to accounting problems
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team environment. Must be prepared to work additional hours to meet monthly, quarterly and annual close deadlines
  • Strong leadership, management, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills are also required. Must possess the ability to interface and communicate effectively with executive management and other functions in the organization
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with and influence management and contributors at all levels of the organization.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or Finance, CPAS/MBA preferred
  • 5-7 years in Big 5 public accounting firm and accounting role within a private or public organization

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds
