The Horticulture Supervisor should have strong leadership and people skills, seasonal color design, growing, and maintenance experience, extensive plant knowledge, design creativity, and a passion for campus beautification.
Must be able to perform snow and ice removal tasks, and respond at any time of the day or night when scheduled by management regardless of the weather conditions
Must be able to work with offensive chemical odors, noisy equipment, hot, cold rainy and dusty conditions.
Must use provided appropriate personal protective equipment as required (hard hat, vest, gloves, safety glasses, etc.).
The Horticulture Supervisor reports to the Landscape Services Installation Asst. Manager and works closely as a team with other departments and customers across campus.

Education & Experience

Required Qualifications:
High School diploma/GED and four years of landscape, horticulture or other related field; or two years post-secondary education in a landscaping, horticulture or related technical field or four years' experience in greenhouse/nursery plant production related to the duties of this position with proven greenhouse and plant knowledge, as well as proven supervisory work. Stable work history required.
Have before hire and maintain after hire a valid driver's license. A valid driver's license must be maintained for the operation of an OSU vehicle, which is required in the performance of job duties as assigned. Pesticide applicators license required. Ability to pass a pesticide certification within 3 months of hire if not already licensed.
Strong attention to work detail, leadership, decision making, and organizational skills.

Ability to motivate, evaluate and effectively supervise staff as a team.
Ability to train and direct the work of others.
Ability to use a shovel and other tools and equipment, lift 50 lbs and work in inclement weather to meet the physical requirements as determined by the position and job duties.
Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
Strong communication skills both written and verbal.
Advanced computer skills.
Knowledge of greenhouse systems with the ability to operate greenhouse timers, clocks, and controls.
Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety instructions and procedures.
Sufficient math skills to be able to safely apply pesticide as per label.
Ability to multitask and coordinate projects through to completion and in a timely manner.
Knowledge, keen understanding of irrigation and proper plant needs and watering.
Must be able to work under minimal supervision.
Will work closely with Landscape Services plant rental customers, Facilities Management departments and staff, vendors, contractors, as well as have frequent contact with campus administration, faculty, staff and students.
Preferred Qualifications:
A Bachelor of Science degree in Landscape Design or a related Horticulture field with five years proven design, plant growing and knowledge skills, and 3 years of supervisory duties.
