Description
Summary: The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform complex administrative and professional work while assisting the Planning Director in the overall department program coordination, quality control, intergovernmental activities, special projects, public relations, research, personnel, graphics, budget, training, or long-range and zoning administration projects. Direct supervision is exercised over the classifications of GIS Manager, Senior Planner and Community Planner. The Assistant Director reports to the Director. This position may assume the Director’s duties and functions during any absences of the Director.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Translates administrative and planning objectives outlined by the Planning Administrator into specific programs and projects;
Supervises professional, technical and administrative employees involved in Planning Department functions;
Serves on intergovernmental committees and task forces and intergovernmental groups as assigned;
Attends and makes presentations at Fiscal Court and City Council meetings and subcommittee meetings dealing with planning issues;
Supervises and oversees special projects as assigned relating to planning activities;
Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service;
Helps coordinate functions of the Building and Inspections division as necessary;
Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervises 3-5 employees.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in urban or city planning, landscape architecture, engineering, architecture, or a related field.
Five to seven years of experience in planning
AICP preferred.
Other combinations of experience and education that meet the requirements may be substituted.
Computer Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Excel, Word and Outlook.
