Summary: The Estimator/Sales person is responsible for producing accurate and timely bid estimates for the paving division. The successful employee will have a background in both estimating and sales. The primary focus is on estimates for commercial asphalt projects including parking lots, municipal roadways and some occasional residential work. The employee will maintain current customer relations, as well as expand the market base with new customers. The employee should ensure estimates are produced in a timely and accurate fashion and the company will be able to present and win an above average percentage of bids. The employee is responsible for staying abreast of product, supply and sub-contractor prices as well as the company’s operating production capabilities to ensure accurate estimates. The position includes negotiating pricing with subcontractors, performs site assessments and makes decisions on how to adjust price based upon circumstances of site or project.

  • Must have strong organizational and time management skills
  • Be willing to work outdoors in extreme temperatures, both hot and cold

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs all aspects of bidding process, including: measuring properties for field estimates, reviewing invitations to bid, pre-site inspections, preparing estimates.
  • Submit accurate company bids in a timely and effective manner. Meet deadlines of requesting party. Meet or exceed established sales goals, if assigned.
  • Accurately records and meets the budgeted estimating man-hours required to generate an estimate on all assigned jobs. Communicates within department as appropriate.
  • Works with vendors, suppliers, purchasing and production staff to maintain good understanding of material availability.
  • Frequent customer contact to discuss project and make changes/corrections as needed.
  • Pre-Installation/Service: review contracts, write up new job information, coordinate utility locates, obtain and determine placement of material on job site, write subcontracts and change orders, secure performance and payment bonds when necessary.
  • Provides value engineering ideas that may improve the company’s competitive position. Establishes the company as a “subject matter expert” within the market.
  • Installation/Service: attend on-site job meetings, monitor quality of plant material, and document activities in order to complete installation in a satisfactory manner.
  • Stays abreast and current on product, vendors, sub-contractors and other suppliers’ prices to ensure accurate estimates. Continuously sources for new products and/or vendors capable of advancing company goals.
  • Ensures new products or vendors are qualified, tested and/or approved to be reliable before utilizing.
  • Maintain keen awareness and provides candid feedback on customer relationship and the customer’s perceptions of the product and service being provided, to maximize customer retention.
  • Increases customer base by pursuing and obtaining new business, expanding into the CT market.
  • Communicate to appropriate parties any problem areas and work to find immediate resolution.
  • Post Installation: arrange inspections, submit warranty reports, monitor payment and/or collection needs, and perform walk-throughs.
  • Analyzes awarded bids for estimating accuracy.
  • Represents Company at various events, organizations and associations for the purpose of building relationships that lead to new business. Acts in capacity of Company representative and develops community ties to enhance public image and brand of the Company. Maintains positive relations with other companies in the industry and related industries.
  • Participates in various industry associations to increase knowledge of marketplace, sales opportunities, the competition, selling techniques and best practices.
  • Maintains database to include current contact information, pricing and product information.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications & Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree (preferred)
  • 3 – 5 years’ experience estimating, project management or related area
  • Strong math skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office; Knowledge of Bid to Win Software (preferred)
  • Valid driver’s license; clean driving history

Work Environment and Physical Demand

The employee must regularly lift and move up to 10 pounds and frequently lift or move up to 40 pounds. Employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk.

Additionally, he/she will regularly be exposed to outdoor weather conditions including extreme heat or cold. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but at times can be loud.

Must have the ability to work over time, flexibility in schedule, including evening or weekend hours as needed.
