What are the responsibilities and job description for the Airport Police Officer position at Onslow County?
All applicants must meet NC Minimum Standards for Certification of Law Enforcement Officers. All Applicants must also have an active valid certification issued by the NC Criminal Justice Training and Standards or the NC Sheriff’s Training and Standard’s.
Out-of-state applicants will be evaluated to determine the amount and quality of their training and experience. At a minimum, out-of-state candidates must have two years of full-time, sworn law enforcement experience and have successfully completed a basic law enforcement training course accredited by the state from which they are transferring in order to be considered for transfer to a North Carolina law enforcement agency. Out-of-state transferees cannot have a break in service exceeding three years
- Enforce all local, state and federal laws; patrolling assigned area; investigating criminal activity; ensuring safety of the public; testifying in court; maintaining records and files; preparing reports.
- Responds to radio dispatches and answers calls and complaints.
- Provides law enforcement support in passenger screening and baggage check-in area; maintains records in accordance with law.
- Provides airport security training to airport personnel and tenants.
- Provides and maintains support on curbside for unattended vehicles and baggage.
- Routinely patrols airport perimeter access gates and fuel barn.
- Conducts daily inventory of vehicles in parking lot.
- Enforces parking regulations in front of terminal and on access roads; issues citations.
- Operationalizes Airport Emergency Plan in cooperation with local LEO agencies.
- Conducts spot-inspections of personnel for proper wearing of security badges; controls badge inventory.
- Enforces County Taxi Ordinance; issues taxi permits; inspects taxis.
- Provides security escort for contractors, vendors and maintenance personnel, along with military charter flights.
- Serves as airport emergency point of contact with TSA.
- Coordinates airlines security procedures with tenant airlines.
- Investigates traffic accidents on airport property.
- Controls vehicle access inside airport perimeter; issues permits, decals and access media.
- Performs assigned functions as a Disaster Ready Team (DRT) member, if appointed or volunteer.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Thorough knowledge of police methods, practices and procedures; general knowledge of local, State and Federal laws and FAA security and airport operations procedures; general knowledge of the principles and techniques of emergency medical care; ability to deal courteously, but firmly, with the public; ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable course of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances; possession of physical agility and endurance ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
High school diploma or GED and considerable experience in law enforcement, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
