Position: The Executive Director is the organizational leader of Opera on the James and reports to the Board of Directors, providing the management, leadership and vision needed in order to ensure the organizational, artistic and financial success of the Company. Collaborating with the Artistic Director, the ED ensures the artistic success of the Company, while raising the Company’s community profile and enhancing its reputation for excellence locally, regionally, and nationally. As spokesperson, advocate and visible representative of Opera on the James through Central Virginia and the U.S., the Executive Director takes an active part in the life of the community and resides here, ensuring that the Company engages, reflects, and celebrates the rich diversity of Central Virginia.
The Executive Director works closely with the Board of Directors to oversee the strategic planning of Opera on the James and ensures that the Artistic Director successfully leads and directs the artistic and production staff. Together, they actively explore opportunities for co-commissions, co-productions, and other collaborative projects.
The Executive Director is responsible and accountable for the overall management of Opera on the James. The ED drives the yearly budgeting cycle and is responsible for financial performance and takes a leadership role in fundraising for the company. The ED works closely with the Board of Directors to ensure good governance, communication, and transparency; and leads the administrative staff. Providing guidance and support to those who serve as volunteers, the ED fosters a culture of success among all stakeholders.
The Executive Director leads the Company in addressing priorities identified in the current and ongoing strategic plan in the areas of artistic leadership; engagement and experience; human resources, infrastructure, and technology; capital structure and strength.
Candidate Profile:The ideal candidate will present a proven record of success as a visionary leader and skilled manager of people, projects, and organizations. A love of opera or experience with performing arts is not necessary, though the willingness to develop expertise in these areas by working in partnership with the Artistic Director is expected.
The successful candidate will have excellent financial management skills and the demonstrated ability to develop and achieve balanced budgets. The ED will have the creativity and entrepreneurial ability to explore and develop additional revenue streams to support the work of the Company.
The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic fundraiser who is willing and able to devote substantial time and effort to donor cultivation and solicitation. Excellent written and oral communication skills are expected. The ED will be able to speak passionately and persuasively about the value and importance of Opera on the James to the culture of the community and will have a track record of developing productive partnerships and collaborations with individuals and other organizations. The Executive Director will have the creativity, charisma and strength of personality to unite the Board, patrons, donors and staff around a vision and operating strategy for Opera on the James that will allow the Company to thrive in the decades ahead.

Compensation: Compensation, including a benefit package, is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
