EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in repairing, and maintaining gasoline and diesel powered buses, trucks, and other vehicles and equipment including small engines and grounds equipment. Responds to emergency calls as needed.  This job serves as the lead mechanic with limited supervisory responsibilities.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

 

Directs or assigns workers in electrical, electronic, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment. Inspects the work of mechanics in overhaul and maintenance of the district's fleet. Performs activities of workers supervised.

 

Diagnoses or assists workers in diagnosing malfunctions in vehicles and equipment.

 

Establishes an efficient and effective system of routine maintenance and preventative care.

 

Maintains a current inventory of supplies and equipment. Sets up and supervises a system for receipt and issuance of parts and supplies. Requisitions and keeps supply of spare parts.

 

Studies production schedules and estimates worker hour requirements for completion of job assignments.

 

Interprets company policies to workers and enforces safety regulations. Promotes a high standard of safety and good housekeeping methods in all work-connected areas. Reports unsafe and hazardous conditions.

 

Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of shop, department, or work crew.

 

Assists in recruitment, screening, training. Analyzes and resolves work problems, or assists workers in solving work problems.

 

Substitutes as bus driver when necessary.

 

Reads, understands and complies with appropriate MSDS, confined space and lockout/tag out information.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Have the ability to obtain CDL with passenger and air brake endorsement within 30 days of hiring.  Appropriate asbestos license may be required assigned by Director or designee.

 

 

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

 

ANALYTICAL and REASONING SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

TECHNOLOGY SKILLS

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Database software; Internet software; Inventory software; Order processing systems; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software; Maintenance program for equipment.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; talk or hear and taste or smell.  The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.  While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts.  The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

 

OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED

Will perform other duties as may be assigned by the superintendent or designee, necessary and appropriate to achievement of the program and/or District goals and objectives.
