What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Engineer position at Opterus?
Opterus is working on the most innovative and game changing space deployable structures and mechanisms technologies ever conceived. If you share an interest in composites, space, structures, mechanisms, and building cool things that will change the world, we invite you to join our team.
Opterus exists for three reasons – first, to fulfill a passion for cutting-edge advanced composite structures. We love inventing, building, and bringing to market crazy advanced folding, deforming, and shape changing structures. We’re working on huge space-based solar power platforms, 10,000 square meter solar sails, cislunar radar systems, origami deployable reflectors, and more. Our second purpose is to provide a rewarding place to work by calming the chaos that plagues many startups in the new space industry. We are not VC funded, publicly traded, or otherwise driven to maximize financial output at your expense. Our purpose is to create an enabling, intellectually rewarding, healthy, and stable work environment where we can exercise our passion for structures and business. And third, yes, we’re here to make money. Unlike most startups that promise a payout far in the future if and when the company sells and all others have been paid, Opterus has a generous yearly profit-sharing bonus plan that ensures you directly financially benefit from your hard work.
We’re looking for a mechanical or aerospace engineer experienced in spacecraft structural and mechanical systems to join our team. Responsibilities will focus on product development and may span the entire product life cycle: concept development, prototype design, build and testing, research and development, technology qualification testing, and transition to production. Experience with spacecraft, SolidWorks, Abaqus, and deployable hinges, booms, solar arrays, and RF systems is desired.
Opterus offers a 9/80 schedule with every other Friday off, allowing flexibility for extended weekends and a great work-life balance. Opterus also offers a generous benefits package that includes paid holidays and time off; a profit-sharing bonus plan; a 401(k) with matching funds; and life, AD&D, medical, and dental & vision insurances. Opterus pays 100% of employee and 70% of dependent health insurance premiums. Other perks: two kegs, shuffleboard, and pets are welcome. Did we mention that the Fort Collins/Loveland area has a 40% lower cost of living than Boulder and is 10% lower cost than Denver?
Candidates should have a Bachelor of Science degree or higher in the field of engineering (mechanical or aerospace). Candidates are required to be US citizens and to be able to obtain a US Department of Defense security clearance if needed.
Base salary is $70,000 to $120,000 per year.
