What are the responsibilities and job description for the Surgery Scheduler position at Optum?
OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION:
Responsible for scheduling patient surgeries and coordinating associated tasks such as verification of eligibility, completion of paperwork and coordination of pre-operative items and tasks.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Consistently exhibits behavior and communication skills that demonstrate Optum’s commitment to superior customer service, including quality, care and concern with each and every internal and external customer.
- Schedules patient surgeries according to department policies.
- Coordinates and schedules pre-operative laboratory and other testing.
- Acts as a liaison between clinicians and hospitals as needed.
- Verifies insurance and eligibility as needed.
- Obtains all necessary consents prior to surgery.
- Assures that surgeries are pre-authorized if required.
- Processes procedures for collection of co-pays and deductibles.
- Processes surgical disability forms if applicable.
- Assists with pre-operative education as required.
- Adheres to Universal Precautions at all times.
- Adheres to safety policies and procedures at all times.
- Uses, protects, and discloses Optum patients’ protected health information (PHI) only in accordance with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
- High school diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent. Includes special certification required for specific jobs.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum:
- Over 1 year and up to and including 3 years of experience.
Preferred:
- Prior experience as an Appointment Scheduler.
Requirement:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
- Computer literate.
- Proficiency in Microsoft office applications (Word, Excel).
- Ability to type 25 wpm.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- Ability to handle multiple telephone calls.
- Excellent telephone skills and etiquette.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Bilingual preferred.
