Function/Duties of Position:
This position works closely with the Department Administrator (DA) and the Department Chair to oversee all administrative, academic, research, financial and clinical aspects of the Department of Surgery. In this capacity, the position is directly responsible for all research, innovation, and education programs and represents the Department of Surgery and Division as appropriate and provides administrative continuity in the DA's absence. Responsibilities include:

  • Develops, implements, and evaluates Department/Division and faculty activities in accordance with the strategic plan
  • Proactively addresses critical issues and keeps the DA and chair informed
  • Coordinates all information system activities and communications across departments
  • Maintains faculty OPP contracts
  • Develops and revises faculty compensation plans
  • Plans monthly faculty meetings and attends Division head meetings
  • Acts as liaison between the Division Head and OHSU Hospital and Clinics, the School of Medicine Dean’s office, and the Department of Surgery administration
  • Ensure that all faculty paperwork and credentialing is completed in a timely fashion
  • Develop yearly budget forecasts; accumulate and track financial data to project finances using Oracle financials, data warehouse/analytical tool, and various other reports
  • Supports the Vice Chair of Research to dvelop and implement strategic initiatives
  • Directly manages the Dept of Surgery's core research activities assuring compliance, productivity, and progress
  • Oversees clinical practice operations and processes, working with the Clinical Practice Manager and Finance Manager to produce reports and statistics
  • Works closely with internal and external stakeholders to recruit for and support the general surgery practices across the health system consistent with the strategic plan of the University
  • Administration of all HR activity within the Division, working closely with human resources and School of Medicine Administration as needed, to include recruitment, hiring, facilitation of any immigration issues, training, performance evaluation, development, discipline, termination, etc.
  • Supervise and direct all immediate subordinates, rendering advice, assistance, and guidance as necessary

Required Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Health Care Administration or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 5 years of experience directing and managing in an academic and/or healthcare environment, including direct management of staff
  • Extensive experience in managing fiscal and clinical operations
  • Previous budgetary experience including experience with fiscal and budgetary procedures
  • Proven ability to effectively manage operational resources (people, space, supplies and equipment, etc.) to meet both quality and cost expectations/targets
  • Excellent communication, organizational, administrative and financial management skills
  • Ability to make independent decisions, analyze situations, solve complex problems and initiate actions for the effective management of a large and complex department
  • Demonostrated effective leadership skills
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience in a complex, multi-faceted academic medical center environment
  • Pervious experience with professional practice issues
