Department Overview

The Division of Abdominal Organ Transplantation provides state-of-the-art care for patients with end stage liver disease, end stage renal disease, hepatobiliary and pancreaticobiliary disease, as well as patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. The liver transplant program at OHSU was constructed by division chief Susan Orloff, M.D.; she and her team continue to expand the volume of transplants while improving survival rates and outcomes. The Division of Abdominal Organ Transplantation is active in research and education, and partners with the Division of Surgical Oncology to sponsor two hepato-pancreatico-biliary fellows each year.

Function/Duties of Position

The duties of this position are in support of the missions and objectives of OHSU, the School of Medicine, the Department of Surgery, and the Division of Abdominal Organ Transplantation. The Division Head of Abdominal Organ Transplantation is responsible for the success of the clinical, research, and academic components of The Division of Abdominal Organ Transplantation in the Department of Surgery at OHSU.

 

Duties of the position include: Supervision and development of the division faculty including advanced practice providers; leading a busy clinical practice spanning two hospitals (OHSU & Portland VA Medical Center); supervision and education of trainees including fellows, general surgery residents, and medical students; participation in administrative committees; administration and supervision of grants and gifts received by the division; monitoring divisional research; supervision of patient care activities. In addition, the Division Head should provide a platform and support for the faculty to participate in academic endeavors institutionally, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. They should have national and international recognition in the field of abdominal organ transplantation. 

 

This position teaches clinical support staff and faculty in their area of professional expertise. Enhancement of divisional teaching and educational opportunities is done through ongoing invited lectures at the institution as well as locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. The Division Head should provide mentoring on a broad scale while also modeling best practices, educating and mentoring all staff, faculty members and trainees. Learning should be guided and executed through delegating graduated and focused levels of responsibility to all members of the team. A leadership role shall be done in education and training, through the residency or graduate student selection process, evaluation committee, education/curriculum committee, or dissertation committee. The Division Head must have a substantial record of accomplishment in teaching and be knowledgeable of and compliant with all applicable regulating bodies (e.g. ACGME competencies for clinical faculty, NIH guidelines for research faculty). The Division Head will work with the ASTS Training Program Director to continue to develop the Division’s ASTS Fellowship Program, as well as continued collaboration and involvement with the Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary (HPB) Surgery Fellowship. 

 

The Division Head provides an outstanding level of professional performance and guidance (e.g. quality of investigation for research faculty; quality of clinical care for clinical faculty). Professional performance is delivered in a manner that is compliant with the regulations and guidelines of all relevant regulating bodies (i.e. UNOS, DNV, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, OHSUIRB, NIH, and all other state, federal, and institutional regulatory guidelines). This position treats all patients, research subjects, trainees and co-workers with dignity, respect, and has a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

 

The Division Head should maintain a program of scholarly research and publication activity directed towards improved understanding for the causes, detection, and treatment of medical and surgical diseases in the field, as well as creation of innovative strategies to further the field. Clinical, Translational, and Basic Science investigative work is welcomed and encouraged. 

 

The Division Head may engage in public service through consultative activities within OHSU and non-University groups as approved by the Chair. They will participate in departmental/hospital administration or leadership roles as approved by the Chair. The successful candidate for Division Head will have a track record of a commitment to surgical education, research, as well as having superb clinical talents, competency and leadership capabilities. 

Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate in Medicine (M.D) & postdoctoral training (completion of ASTS approved Transplant Fellowship)
  • Board Certified in General Surgery
  • DEA Certification
  • Unrestricted Oregon Board of Medical Examiners license
  • Receipt of medical staff privileges at OHSU and VA Hospital
