OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Hematology/Oncology/BMT Program is the region’s only comprehensive center for childhood cancer and blood disorders. The Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/BMT Program is a nationally recognized leader in pediatric cancer, bleeding and clotting disorders, multimodality treatment and bone marrow transplant. Doernbecher cancer experts partner with researchers at the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute and the Pape Family Foundation Pediatric Research Institute to provide the newest and most advanced treatments in the effort to make childhood cancer a thing of the past. The Pediatric Hem/Onc/BMT program understands that kids need more than good medicine for healing. The Peds Hem/Onc/BMT team works diligently to provide support for the emotional, developmental and social needs children and families facing a cancer or blood disorder diagnosis by providing support services to you and your family. Family involvement is always encouraged because families and caregivers are the most important support for any child going.
Function/Duties of Position
Inpatient hospital and outpatient clinic setting. There are frequent interruptions during the day that require continual prioritization of tasks. Nurse is required to be self-motivated and self-directed to support navigator duties and clinical needs as directed by Nurse Manager. Schedule will vary to meet operational needs but will be scheduled in accordance with unit schedule posting. Typical schedule could be: two 8hr shifts/week and two 10 hr shifts/week, hours variable.
● Shared and collaborative office space.
● Ability to alternate between various on and off campus work areas, depending on the practices’ space allocation, division of daily work activities, etc.
Job Responsibilities:
The Pediatric Oncology Nurse Navigator (PONN), an integral member of the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplant Team, provides high level care coordination for patients and families diagnosed with cancer throughout all phases of the cancer care continuum. The PONN plays a critical role in the disease-specific and treatment-specific education surrounding diagnosis and treatment, coordinates care when patient in on the inpatient and outpatient setting, and continuous communication for close collaboration among program providers, community agencies, and primary care providers. The PONN also serves as a leader within the care team, providing clear communication, nursing education, and seamless care across the many hospital departments.
Primary responsibilities include application of nursing expertise to facilitate interdepartmental care coordination, in both the inpatient and outpatient setting, education across the continuum through diagnosis, treatment, and long-term monitoring with the goal being to maximize resource utilization and help families overcome healthcare barriers. The PONN maintains open lines of communication with both internal and external customers involved in providing services to these patients and their families. The PONN will attend and participate in weekly team meetings. The PONN will also provide back up to some of the specialty specific needs for discharge and be available as a resource with any needs that are beyond the case manager’s scope of knowledge and responsibility. This position can be flexed to meet the clinical and operational needs of the unit, which could include providing direct-patient care.

Required Qualifications
- External Applicants: BSN - Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA). *Current OHSU employees: BSN preferred.
- At least 3 years of experience with pediatric hematology/oncology/BMT population.
- Recent experience in an ambulatory setting.
- Experience in educating families, patients and staff.
- Communication skills including fluency in oral and written English.
- Navigate information technology associated with the position.
- Experience working in ambulatory pediatric practice and telephonic triage.
- Use Electronic Health Record information and associated tools.
- Facilitate care coordination with other providers and services to complement pediatric care and meet holistic needs of the patient and family.
- General skills to enable problem solving and priority setting.
- Interpersonal skills sufficient to provide care, instruction, and education to patients and their family members.
- Ability to use the above skills in an environment where the volume of work is unpredictable.
- Ability to collaborate with other members of the health care team and maintain confidentiality
- Strong computer and typing skills.
- Communication skills including fluency in oral and written English
- Basic computer skills including the ability to send/receive email, navigate information technology associated with the position, and use Electronic Health Record information and tools
- Current unencumbered Oregon RN license
- Current PALS and BLS certification issued by the American Heart Association or the Military Training Network
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation
