The STEM Research Center is seeking a Researcher. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.
The STEM Research Center (Center throughout) at Oregon State University was established in 2012 as one of OSU’s Centers established and operated under the Research Office. The Center’s mission is to conduct applied research with a broad range of partners and nurture communities toward improved systems of STEM learning for all. The Center’s research aims to enhance understanding of how people with diverse backgrounds and life circumstances engage with and build knowledge, understanding and skills around scientific, environmental, technological, engineering or mathematical concepts, and develop interests and identities as STEM learners with dispositions to engage with STEM-related issues as consumers, citizens, and professionals.
The person in this position will perform graduate-level social science, mixed methods research. This includes working as an integral part of a research team on research design, instrument development, field work, data collection, processing, analysis, making meaning of data, and disseminating research results. The employee will assist and collaborate on a variety of STEM learning research projects across five thematic areas: institutional transformation; the interface of science and society; professional learning and growth; learning ecosystems; and STEM teaching and learning. This person also facilitates a work environment and project partnerships that encourages equity an inclusion in our research practices and research design. Most center research is funded by the National Science Foundation, NASA, and private foundations.
Position Duties
30% Data Collection and Analysis
- Collect data through interviews, document analysis, observations, data mining, surveys, etc.
- Prepare data files and complete data entry
- Manage datasets and metadata
- Collaboratively develop analysis protocols and frameworks
- Conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses
25% Research Planning and Development
- Conduct literature reviews and summarize results
- Assist/collaborate in development of research design
- Provide research team support with IRB processes, proposal development, and project ideation
- Develop and test surveys and other research instruments
25% Project coordination and communications:
- Communicate with external partners to facilitate activities that support collaboration across many organizational types
- Coordinate workshops, meetings, and other research related logistics
- Maintain organized and accessible project work files and folders
- Schedule and coordinate data collection activities
- Occasionally recruit and train research assistants to help with data collection, cleaning, entry
15% Writing, reporting and dissemination:
- Summarize research results in writing
- Generate visualizations of data and results
- Work with teams to disseminate research findings to both academic and public audiences. A Senior Researcher will lead research dissemination efforts.
- Work with teams to write up results in the form of grant reports, white papers, targeted summary reports and manuscripts for peer review. A Senior researcher will lead publications or mentor team members to lead publications.
- Present findings at conferences and other meetings
5% Other duties as assigned:
- Participate in Center development activities
- Provide peer support and review work for collaborators and other Center employees
- Participate in professional development opportunities including courses, conferences, and other learning
- Service to OSU and in the field as agreed upon with supervisor
Minimum/Required Qualifications
- Master’s Degree with a Social Science or Education emphasis with evidence of completion of two research methods courses (e.g., education, sociology, psychology, public policy, human dimensions of environmental or natural resources) OR at least three years of 50% time conducting social science research (including evaluation) at the graduate/post graduate level
- Demonstrable commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion through participation or development of initiatives or by applying this lens to programmatic or research efforts
- Demonstrable ability to develop and deploy complex surveys using platforms such as Qualtrics (i.e. well-formatted and written surveys that incorporate skip logic and conform to IRB standards)
- Prior experience conducting quantitative and qualitative or mixed methods social science research
- Prior experience using qualitative and quantitative analysis tools such as R, SPSS, Stata, Dedoose, NVivo
- Demonstrable ability to effectively use MS Excel or comparable database programs
- Strong personal management and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and timelines concurrently and independently
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing in different contexts, modes and with different audiences
- Ability to conduct research as part of multi-organization teams with diverse perspectives and experiences
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
- Familiarity with requirements for human-subjects research policies and protections (e.g., having completed IRB training and certification).
- Experience as author or co-author of technical reports and/or peer-reviewed publications
- Experience effectively using cloud-based file sharing and collaboration software (e.g. Google Drive, Box, Slack, etc.)
- Experience successfully using Zoom and Outlook
- Graduate level course work in applied social science statistics
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Work is preferred on site at OSU in Corvallis, OR. This person will have a work station in an open office setting. The work week is 40 hours per week, with a somewhat flexible schedule to account for working with partners in other time zones, and in support of work-life balance. Travel may be required to attend project meetings, for collecting data or to attend professional conferences and meetings. Flexible schedules and the option for remote work are possible as agreed upon with supervisor to the degree they do not negatively impact the employee’s ability to collaborate with Center, OSU, and external partners.
