The market leader in in Aluminothermic welding process for railroad applications is seeking an experienced metallurgist to join our team.
The metallurgist evaluates and controls the materials and material properties of metallurgical welding powders and welds and assists in developing, evaluating, and improving manufacturing methods and properties.
The applicant must utilize their metallurgical knowledge to ensure Group quality and industry standards are met. The metallurgist is responsible for the exothermic metallurgical welding powder formulations that ensures daily production operations.
The metallurgist will work with customers to support the use of aluminothermic welds including feedback and reports based on metallurgical findings as needed.
Hands on practical knowledge, experience and understanding of the aluminothermic welding in the railroad industry will be developed by the candidate in this position.
The metallurgist will participate in industry standards meetings and conferences.
Key responsibilities:
· Conduct analysis to determine material properties and performance for strength, ductility, hardness, chemistry and soundness to determine if prescribed standards have been met.
· Perform failure analysis and identify root causes.
· Maintain the quality control systems and operating procedures for the verification/control function of the company.
· Implement corrective actions and process improvements.
· Generate reports on metallurgical findings for internal and external customers.
· Keep up to date with technological developments in the industry and advancements in metallurgical science.
· Attend and participate in industry standard meetings and conferences.
· Support material selection and procurement/purchasing department.
· Monitor sand properties to produce welds with good surface appearance and free from sand related defects.
· Responsible for technically improving quality related to sand or metallurgical defects.
· Directly responsible for the chemical and welding laboratory equipment condition, calibration, and material usage.
· Supervise the weld and chemical laboratory in an efficient manner to ensure consistent production testing and data collection and recording.
· Responsible for material certifications.
· Responsible for material evaluations (oxides, alloys, alloy systems, binders, additives, coatings etc.)
· Assisting in R&D of new products, systems or equipment related to welding.
Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in physical metallurgy or material science.
· Minimum 5 to 7-years of experience in similar role.
· Strong understanding of metals, alloys, and their properties in welds.
· Experience with metallography, spectroscopy, and other analytical methods.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
· Supporting customers with analysis and feedback
· Exceptional problem-solving skills.
· Pre-employment drug screening is required.
Travel up to approximately 25% . Domestic and International
