Position Summary
The Manager, Operatory is responsible for the 24-hour management of the orthopedic operating room team. The manager plans, organizes, schedules, monitors, and leads the work of individuals and groups to attain desired results; selects and develops staff, and ensures staff productivity; facilitates Centra's and OrthoVirginia's strategic plan; maintains quality patient care; participates in budgetary planning and functions within budgetary guidelines. Works closely with the OR manager, VP of perioperative services, and Senior director of the Orthopaedic service line within Centra. Reports to the Executive Director at OrthoVirginia.

Primary Functions & Accountabilities
- Plans, organizes, and directs all activities of the Orthopaedic OR Team according to its policies, procedures, philosophy, and objectives.
- Ensures proper financial management of department resources.
- Drives unit adherence to National Patient Safety goals.
- Serves as internal risk manager and oversees the implementation of safety initiatives, ensuring a safe environment for patients, medical staff, and facility employees.
- Establishes appropriate staffing patterns to meet budget and clinical patient needs.
- Operates unit within computed productivity targets.
- Supports the service lines ideology, mission, goals, and objectives
- Performs in accordance with the facility's policies and procedures
- Follows the facility's standards for ethical business conduct
- Conducts self as a positive role model and team member
- Recognizes patients' rights and responsibilities and supports them in performance of job duties
- Participates in service line committees, meetings, in-services, and activities
- Contributes input into short- and long-term goals for the service line
- Helps maintain facility and equipment to ensure cleanliness, sterility, and operational ability at all times; reports deficiencies to Managing Director of Orthopaedic Service line and OR manager
- Communicates effectively and professionally with patients, visitors, physicians, and coworkers
- Interacts with others in a positive, respectful, and considerate manner
- Promotes effective communication between the clinical and administrative areas as well as the business office and physicians
- Promotes cost containment and efficient use of facility resources
- Makes recommendations to Managing Director of Orthopaedic service line for potential cost-effective improvements
- Assists in monitoring FTE utilization and makes recommendations to promote cost-effective man-hour practices
- Assists in developing cost analyses to promote cost-effective practices
- Assists in the implementation and maintenance of the facility's adopted compliance program
- Performs according to established compliance policies and procedures
- Adheres to safety policies and procedures in performing job duties and responsibilities
- Implements practices and regulations adopted to provide safety in the healthcare environment
- Monitors the facility's physical environment and initiates methods for maintaining safety, comfort, cleanliness, and orderliness; reports physical environment status to Managing Director of Orthopaedic Service line
- Responds to emergency situations competently
- Ensures that OSHA requirements are met by clinical staff and that supplies are readily available
- Participates in continuing education and other learning experiences
- Shares knowledge gained in continuing education with staff
- Maintains membership in relevant professional organizations
- Seeks new learning experiences by accepting challenging opportunities and responsibilities
- Welcomes suggestions and makes recommendations for continuing education of clinical staff.
- Assists with orientation programs for new employees in surgery department
- Applies accepted clinical nursing principles and practices to patient-care activities in the facility
- Coordinates patient-care activities with physicians and anesthesia providers to provide continuity of patient care
- Assists the OR manager to oversee all nursing activities during an emergency to verify that patient needs are met
- Participates in primary care of patients as needed and oversees surgery department to verify that patients' needs are met
- Enforce the implementation of nursing practice standards and licensing and accreditation rules/regulations to provide quality patient care
- Recommends any revision in patient-care policies and procedures as necessary to conform to accepted principles and practices
- Respects patients' right to privacy, dignity, and confidentiality
- Controls staff/patient traffic to help prevent infections
- Applies material management principles to establish procedures for use
- Promotes cost-effectiveness and implements procedures to control waste
- Monitors the care and cleaning of equipment to maintain proper working condition
- identify and evaluate need for items relative to trends and physician requests
- Reviews inventory for availability of supplies and equipment necessary to meet patient needs
- Oversees inventory, maintaining adequate supplies and equipment and providing for their economical use
Education
- Required Education - Bachelor's Degree in related clinical field. Preferred Master's Degree in Business
Experience
- Required Experience - Previous OR experience required. Orthopaedic OR experience preferred
- Required Experience - A minimum 1 year management/leadership experience or OR coordinator experience
- RN License Required
