What are the responsibilities and job description for the Statistician Intern position at OSF HealthCare?
This internship will be working on site in Peoria, IL at the JUMP Trading Simulation and Education Center. This internship will require the student to work full time hours (Monday-Friday). The student will start in the internship end of May 2023 and work until end of July 2023 or beginning of August 2023.
Starting pay for this position is $17.00/hour
POSITION SUMMARY: The Statistician Intern translates data into actionable information that assists leadership with decision making for operational and strategic areas including improved clinical outcomes, financial performance, productivity improvement, cost optimization, staffing, population health management, strategic market analysis, investment analysis, space or supply utilization, and system integration. The Statistician Intern exhibits strong analytical skills, research ability, problem-solving, and written and oral communication.
- This position will work in our Peoria office. Housing will be the responsibility of the intern. Employment is limited to the length of time defined prior to the start of the internship (typically four to ten weeks).
- The intern will be assigned a project sponsor and take part in one or more projects with predefined tasks and set milestones. Assignments will include investigating data sources, extracting data, transforming data into useful information, analyzing data, building data models, performing statistical analyses, proposing changes to existing processes, and presenting findings to leadership.
- Learn from a variety of stakeholders within analytics including the statistician team, business intelligence developers, data scientists, the population health team, data warehousing experts, and analytics leadership.
- Audits and validates data against other sources and communicates data deficiencies. Offers solutions to improve data integrity as needed.
- Responsible for presentation of findings and conclusions to leadership and clinical partners in a cohesive data story that is descriptive, organized, data-driven, visually compelling, and statistically informed.
- At the conclusion of the internship, the Statistician Intern will have an understanding of how a Statistician, working in the area of healthcare analytics, can contribute to improving patient outcomes, operational efficiencies, and financial performance. Interns may also be considered for future career opportunities within our ministry.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Current student attending college or university with progress towards a Bachelors Degree with at least freshman year completed. Typically this will have a concentration in mathematics, computer science, engineering, information systems, analytics, business, finance, economics, or health care administration. At least a 3.0 (on 4.0 scale) overall current undergraduate GPA.
Other Skills/Knowledge:
- Strong analytical and statistical skills are required to address clinical, operational and system related problems, to gather and interpret clinical and financial data, and to prepare clear, concise statistical reports.
- Strong interpersonal, written communication, and oral communication skills are required to share complex information with leaders across the ministry.
- Demonstrated history of using reporting, spreadsheet, and database applications is preferred, including analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data with a focus on statistical tests and methodology.
- Knowledge of database design principles, methodologies, and tools, including workflows, field structure, table layout, joins, etc.
- Analytical and statistical application skills (R, SPSS, SAS, Stata, Minitab, Python, SQL, Business Objects, Crystal Reports, Access, Power BI, Qlikview, Tableau, TIBCO Spotfire, MicroStrategy, mapping/GIS software, Excel with attention to Pivot tables, PowerPivot, PowerQuery, Data Model, etc.) are preferred with the ability to learn new information systems quickly.
