What are the responsibilities and job description for the Controller position at Our House?
Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Controller will be responsible for coordinating the organization’s financial planning and overseeing all accounting practices, interactions with financial institutions and any other financial aspects for Our House, Inc. Our House’s finances are complex in two key ways: Our House benefits from diverse funding sources (government grants and contracts; private grants and donations, and earned income) and Our House’s consolidated books incorporate three entities (Our House, Inc., Our House Community Investment Corporation, and Our House Thrift Store, LLC). The Controller will need to be hands on and supervise a small finance team.
Responsibilities
- Analyze and clearly communicate monthly and annual financial reports and critical financial matters to stakeholders, including the board of directors.
- Administer and review all financial plans and budgets; monitor progress and changes and keep the leadership team abreast of the organization’s financial status.
- Plan, direct, and coordinate all accounting operational functions for Our House and associated entities.
- Coordinate the annual audit and tax process with the Director of Operations and liaise with external auditors and the finance committee of the board of directors; assess and implement any adjusting journal entries or other changes.
- Provide support for the annual budgeting and planning process.
- Manage organizational cash flow and forecasting.
- Ensure the timely completion of all bill payments, deposits, bookkeeping, and monthly reconciliations.
- Ensure the completion of bi-weekly, in-house payroll, including onboarding new employees and adjusting payroll and benefits.
- Oversee all financial, program, and grants accounting.
- Update and improve the financial policy and procedure manual as necessary.
- Assist the Director of Operations in the procurement and management of insurance and handling of claims.
- Oversee and support the timely response of employment-related inquiries (e.g., unemployment claims, garnishments).
- Complete additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum of a B.A. in a related field.
- At least 5 years of financial management experience.
- QuickBooks experience strongly preferred.
- The ideal candidate has experience of final responsibility for the quality and content of all financial data, reporting and audit coordination for an organization, a division or a significant program area.
- A successful track record in setting priorities; keen analytic, organization and problem solving skills which support and enable sound decision making.
- Excellent communication and relationship building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience with financial audits preferred.
- Knowledge of GAAP required.
- Ability to translate financial concepts to–and to effectively collaborate with—team members who do not have accounting backgrounds.
- A track record in grants management or financial management of nonprofits preferred.
- Must be a trustworthy, hard-working, positive team-player, who is dedicated to the mission of Our House.
Other Requirements
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and vehicle to use in performance of job. This position requires some travel within Central Arkansas.
- Must be able to pass criminal background and child and adult maltreatment screens and a pre-employment drug screen.
- COVID-19 vaccination required or must meet the legal guidelines for an exemption.
Salary and Benefits
- This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position.
- Benefits include employee health insurance (employee premiums paid by Our House) and optional dental, vision, and life insurance (paid by employee) all available after 60 days of employment) and a 401k with Our House matching up to 4% of wages contributed (available after 12 months of employment).
- 10 days of annual leave per year; 8 days of holiday leave per year including a “birthday holiday.”
- 15 days additional leave for illness/”requirements of life”.
