What are the responsibilities and job description for the Special Projects Chemistry Consultant position at Outset Medical?
Position Overview
Outset Medical is looking for a dynamic domain expert in physical chemistry or closely related field to join the Innovation and Research Team. You must have a very strong understanding of the scientific fundamentals of interaction of matter and energy at the nano-, micro- and meso- scales, coupled with hands-on experience on applying this knowledge to build solutions that solve real-world problems. Finally, the ability to effectively distil and synthesize information and effectively communicate it to audiences of varied levels of technical depth will be essential. You will be working within a small, fast-paced team looking at high value problems with transformative potential for kidney care. Term of consultancy is up to six months, with possibility to transition to full time role at conclusion of term.
Responsibilities:
- Perform early-stage feasibility and technical de-risking of new concepts including design and execution of experiments, data analysis and data synthesis
- Operate, develop protocols and train others in the operation of analytical equipment and techniques such as ELISA, GC-MS/ICP-MS, UV-vis
- Assist in authoring white papers, clinical abstracts, scientific papers and marketing collateral
- Foster a culture of innovation and curiosity within the organization with particular emphasis on scientific principles at play in the nano-, micro- and meso- scales.
- Maintains awareness of the relevant IP landscape and actively seeks opportunities to enlarge Outset’s patent portfolio.
- Contribute technical expertise to product development, sustaining engineering, cost reduction, reliability, quality and regulatory projects as required
Required Experience
- Minimum of 10 years of experience, preferably in a technical role within a medical device and/or capital equipment environment, particularly early stage
- Desired experience in one or more of the following areas: surface coatings and modifications, chemical adsorption with media such as carbon, silica and/or zeolite, nano/ultrafiltration membranes, nanomaterials, ion exchange technologies, chemical sensing and/or detection
Preferred Experience
- Working knowledge of medical device development quality systems and regulatory requirements
- Experience with high-volume disposables desired
- Experience with clinical and/or animal trials and data analysis/statistical methods desirable
- BS degree in chemistry, chemical engineering or related field with advanced degree preferred
- Must be able to work independently and in small team settings to deliver results within set timelines with limited supervision
- Excellent communication & presentation skills with internal and external partners
- Technological savvy and curiosity
