Ozumo, one of San Jose’s top spots for sushi and izakaya dining, is seeking a General Manager to lead our team. Situated next to the Hotel Valencia in Santana Row, Ozumo features a premium selection of nigiri, sashimi, makemono and classic Japanese dishes, alongside an extensive collection of sake, Japanese whisky, signature cocktails, wines and beers.
The General Manager (GM) is responsible for all operational aspects of the restaurant. Working with a team of hospitality professionals, they will oversee service, hiring, training, purchasing, menu development, payroll, accounts payable and the financial performance of the restaurant. They will foster a positive and safe work environment and be responsible for the growth and development of their employees.
The GM will drive revenues and profits by developing and consistently providing an exceptional guest experience. To be successful in this role, the GM will need to possess an entrepreneurial vision and have strong leadership skills. We are seeking someone who is organized and an effective communicator. Solid knowledge of Japanese cuisine, sake, wine, cocktails and beer is essential. Qualified applicants must possess a minimum of three years’ experience managing a fine dining restaurant. The GM is required to maintain the highest standards of food, service, health and safety, as well as ensure the efficient and profitable business performance of the restaurant in accordance with California laws.
General Manager Responsibilities:
- Be an effective leader and inspirational role model for staff and management.
- Build clientele by working the room and developing strong relationships with guests and the community.
- Take responsibility for the successful operation of the business by building revenues and controlling expenses.
- Oversee guest service and ensure that the restaurant is properly staffed through effective scheduling and that employees are well trained to perform their jobs.
- Manage labor and purchases to maximize profitability.
- Ensure that policies and procedures are adhered to.
- Provide a positive and safe work environment for staff.
- Maintain the highest standards of food safety, sanitation and cleanliness.
- Ensure that all guests feel welcome and are provided responsive, friendly, and courteous service.
- Hire, train and develop staff to perform their jobs effectively.
- Provide training on service, food and beverage to ensure the team is prepared to deliver knowledgeable service for our guests.
- Purchase product, process invoices and perform inventories at the end of each period.
- Make weekly bank deposits and maintain our daily sales report.
- Process payroll to ensure the accurate recording of hours worked and monitor that meal breaks are effectively administered to avoid penalties. Ensure that all time edits are accompanied by employee sign-off.
- Enforce sanitary practices for food handling, general cleanliness, and maintenance of kitchen and dining areas. Ensure compliance with operational standards, company policies, federal/state/local laws, and ordinances.
- Work with accounting team to create weekly operating statements and period financial statements.
Position Qualifications:
- 3 years management experience in a fine dining restaurant.
- Solid knowledge of Japanese cuisine, fine wine, sake, cocktails and beer.
- Strong leadership, organization and communication skills.
- Thorough understanding of profit and loss statements and budgeting.
- Experience with Toast POS, OpenTable, Paylocity, 7Shifts, Bill.com, Microsoft Office, Google Drive and InDesign is preferred.
- Ability to work nights and weekends.
- California Food Handler Certification
