Position Summary:
The Kenworth suspension department is seeking an engineering supervisor to manage and lead a team of design engineers responsible for suspension design. The engineering supervisor will oversee all aspects of suspension design work including, but not limited to, leading medium program reviews, budget and cost tracking, managing program timelines, plant support, sales support, warranty corrections, and cost reductions. This position will manage, direct, and evaluate the work of others and implement designs into production. Ideal candidates would have a strong leadership background in continuous improvement and experience in promoting team culture that encourages innovation and sets high standards for quality and productivity.
Job Functions / Responsibilities:
- Lead a high-performance suspension development team with a focus on engineering quality
- Responsible for leading, supporting, coaching, and developing the team that successfully performs within a large and complex organization.
- Serve as a technical expert and an effective people manager.
- Manage team deliverables across multiple projects and programs at various stages of development (Definition, Concept, Engineering, and Verification/Validation), and adapt job responsibilities within the team to ensure successful completion.
- Provide supervision and team building; write and administer performance appraisal reviews (PARs), and individual development plans (IDPs)
- Track multiple projects, provide periodic status updates to management, and manage to appropriate product creation process deliverables (e.g. plant support, sales support, warranty correction, cost reduction projects)
- Identify, prioritize, and coordinate resolution of production, field service, quality assurance, supplier, and pre-sales issues
- Work closely with Kenworth order processing, frame design, and MEG/CEG authors to improve process efficiency
- Review and approve of SRDCs, ECNs, drawings, EDPs, OARs, REIs, deviations, and other similar documents
- Prepare engineering activity status reports and other detailed reporting
- Assist senior staff in the development of section capital, expense, and staffing requirements
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications & Skills
- Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering or related field required
- Master's degree in engineering or business preferred
- 5 years of design experience; previous supervisory, project management, and/or lead experience preferred
- Collaborative nature, fosters a sense of team across groups and cultures and is accountable for team interactions and dynamics
- General knowledge of truck or automotive systems/components and how they function/interact; chassis and order processing experience preferred
- Manufacturing plant or operations experience desired
- Familiarity with self-managed teams, lean leadership techniques, and situational leadership
- Prior supervisory experience preferred.
- Demonstrated experience recruiting and managing technical teams, including performance management.
- Demonstrated proactivity and ability to handle multiple tasks
- Thorough knowledge and experience with Creo / Windchill
- Fundamentals of engineering (FE) or professional engineer (PE) license desired
- Six sigma experience desired (i.e. DFSS, GB, BB)
- Commercial Driver's License is desired
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills are a must; customer service oriented
- Up to 10% travel possible
