THE POSITION:
The Success Coach provides academic instruction, tutoring, mentorship, and support to students enrolled in courses offered at the Recovery Education Institute (REI). The Success Coach models self-efficacy, self- advocacy; and professionalism; provides strength-based peer-to-peer support and/or self-help services to students; and encourages students to work with the REI Academic Advisors and Employment Specialist to set and achieve their educational and vocational goals. The Success Coach assists the REI team to develop and implement classes and workshops that focus on wellness, recovery and independent living skills.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides “lived experience” coaching to mentor, train, and support students to acquire and achieve independent living skills, wellness, and basic recovery
- Develops and provides enrichment, life skills and prevocational workshops and
- Assists students develop skills necessary to succeed in an academic setting including study, research, presentation, writing and reading comprehension
- Prepares, researches and assists in the development of workshop curriculum and selects instructional
- In collaboration with the REI team, develops policies and procedures as related to lived experience, wellness, recovery and delivers student evaluation surveys, gathers evaluation data, and measures
- In consultation with REI’s multi-disciplinary training team, develops effective strategies to engage students in higher learning and participate in REI’s educational and pre- vocational/vocational
- In collaboration with REI Academic Advisors and faculty members, assists students to become resourceful self-advocates, including researching and accessing educational opportunities within their communities; touring college campuses; and interviewing at and/or applying to the college(s) of their
- Assists with student recruitment, retention, and outreach
- Assists with program and class/workshop orientations for new and continuing
- Encourages and supports each student’s individual strengths, interests, skills and talents using a recovery-focused and strength-based
- Provides community resources and linkage to peer-focused and peer-run supportive services/programs, including wellness centers and consumer/client
- Provides teachers and/or administrators with relevant feedback and information on students’ progress through observation, regular contact and maintenance of accurate student
- Coaches and assists students to effectively communicate and address their questions and/or concerns with REI’s leadership, academic advisors, faculty instructor, and faculty adjunct members, as
- Works cooperatively with the REI team to ensure the smooth and seamless delivery of educational and pre-vocational/vocational training to
Qualifications:
This position requires that the Success Coach be self-identified as a person with lived (or family) experience with mental illness and the mental health system. The individual should have the ability to identify recovery principles, explain their recovery process and experience in pursuing higher education.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE/POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Individual or family member of individual who has lived experience with mental/behavioral health condition or the mental health system is preferred.
- A. degree required in Humanities, Social Sciences, English, Education, or Cultural Studies and a minimum of six months volunteer/paid work experience, preferably within a mental health/behavioral health or educational setting; OR a minimum of two years college-level tutoring experience and has pursued higher education in the past or currently pursuing higher education in an accredited college or university.
- Demonstrated knowledge of wellness, recovery, and strength-based
- Demonstrated knowledge of written communication abilities within the following formats: writing compositions, memorandums and letters, electronic mail (e-mail), general topic outlines, and report
- Proper English usage, spelling, punctuation, and
- Bilingual in English/Spanish, Korean, Farsi, or Arabic
- Class C driver’s license, daily access to a car and proof of valid automobile insurance OR demonstrated ability to use public
- Must know or quickly acquire basic computer/word processing skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook).
- Flexible work schedule to include evenings.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to stand or sit. The employee is required to use hands to produce records and/or documentation in manual or electronic format. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 5 pounds and occasionally move or lift up to 10 pounds.
