POSITION SUMMARY

This position is a training position. 


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Provides direct patient care and maintains patient confidentiality at all times.  
  2. Ensures that all medications are labeled, non-expired and used correctly.
  3. Performs patient assessments.
  4. Plans, implements, evaluates and documents care. Documents all extra supplies and implants on appropriate forms and in computer. 
  5. Supervises Surgical Technicians during surgery.
  6. Advocates for the patient and their family.
  7. Ensures that all equipment/supplies are available prior to the start of surgery.
  8. Assists the anesthesiologist and is able to quickly find emergency drugs or equipment if needed.
  9. Assures that all documentation, including consents are up to date and filled out correctly prior to leaving the pre-op area.
  10. Adapts quickly to changes in scheduling and procedures.
  11. Manages time appropriately to prevent delays while working in a way that assures the patients safety.
  12. Communicates effectively with others both inside and outside the department and able to notify others as to the patient’s status, changes in procedures, supply shortages, etc.
  13. Works closely with pre-op and PACU regarding patient arrival times, delays or surgeries finishing before their expected time to allow for physician and patient communication.
  14. Performs sterile prep of the patient’s surgical site and monitors sterile field. 
  15. Performs proper hand hygiene and acts as a mentor for others to do the same.
  16. Verifies expiration dates of all medications, supplies and implants prior to opening them on the sterile field.
  17. Assists with the prompt cleaning of the operating room between cases using the current environmental standards.
  18. Communicates effectively with operating room nurse supervisor and others as to equipment failures, supply shortages and scheduling changes.


OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Attends staff meetings, in-services, trainings, conferences, or other company events as requested.
  2. Performs other duties as assigned by OR RN Supervisor or Director of Nursing or Administrator.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

Education, License, and Experience

  • Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing AND Licensed Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Washington.
  • Certified in basic CPR for Healthcare professionals. 
  • Current ACLS certification preferred (post hire advancement to ACLS will be expected).
  • Experience working in a surgery setting preferred.
  • The Board of Managers or Licensing Council may periodically determine other qualifications.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must have body of nursing knowledge and ability to demonstrate sound judgment while giving direct or indirect patient care.
  • Strong clinical nursing skills to effectively provide high quality nursing care.
  • Possess strong organizational skills and a clear understanding of the importance of efficiency and cost effectiveness in an outpatient surgery center.
  • Ability to make quick assessments of patients and handle emergency situations appropriately.
  • Strong ability to work collaboratively with others in a team setting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with diverse groups.
  • Ability to provide dependable and punctual attendance.


GENERAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Most of work is performed in medical clinic setting which requires the ability to freely move about the facility for patient care. May require standing for long periods of time. Must be able to assist the movement of patients which includes the ability to lift up to 25 pounds without assistance and the ability to push/pull patients in wheelchairs or on gurneys. Position requires hand manipulative skills for word processing and writing. Must be able to hear verbal conversations over the phone and in-person with background noise. Must be able to consistently identify objects and persons at a distance and read fine print on various forms. May have exposure to patients with communicable diseases, blood and/or other body fluids.
