1. Performs selected, direct, age-specific patient assessment under the delegation of a registered nurse with with the physician's order as indicated for protocols, medications and diagnostic tests.
a. Assist with the triage process by completing the patient interview process and assessment, collaboratively with the RN.
b. Based on assessment, reports observations to the RN to re-assess the plan of care.
c. Includes the patient/family/significant other(s) in the plan of care whenever possible.
d. Recognizes and reports signs and symptoms of abuse and neglect to the RN.
2. Provides selected, direct, age-specific patient care under the delegation of the registered nurse and with the physician's order as indicated for protocols, medications and diagnostic tests.
. Performs venipuncture in order to obtain blood samples. List and label tests and procedures for blood samples in accordinance with regulatory standards.
a. Collects specimen per ED protocol and initiates (waived) testing. Completes chain of custody urine drug collections.
b. Administers and monitors intravenous fluids and medications per ED competencies.
c. Obtains and recognizes electrocardiogram ischemia or injury patterns and reports to RN/MD.
d. Prepares, gives and evaluates the effectiveness of selective drugs per ED competencies.
e. Administers oxygen and monitors its effectiveness
f. Ensures airway patency and adequate gas exchange and reports findings to RN/MD.
g. Is aware of normal/abnormal arterial blood gases.
h. Provides care to a patient immediately prior to surgery and verifies required procedures/tests and documentation in the clinical record
i. Provides bleeding control, wound care and appropriate dressings to promote healing and prevent complications.
j. Stabilizes, immobilizes and/or protects an injured body part with a supportive appliance, splint inclusive of Robert Jones or traction.
k. Identifies allergic responses to food, medications, insect bites, contrast material, blood, or other substances and initiates protocol.
l. Collaborates with RN in triage by establishing priorities and initiating treatments.
m. Implements Emergency Department protocols in collaboration with the RN.
n. Assists with emergency delivery of a baby
o. Assists with physical & psychological needs of the woman undergoing a spontaneous abortion
p. Serves as an advocate for patients, family and significant others in regard to decisions affecting the plan of care.
q. Triages and discharges patients as delegated by the Registered Nurse.
3. Recognizes life-threatening illnesses or injuries and initiates appropriate treatment delegated by the RN and with the provider's order as indicated for protocols, medications and diagnostic tests.
. Maintains endotracheal and tracheostomy tubes and prevents complications associated with their use
a. Recognizes and facilitates treatment of abnormal cardiac rhythms.
b. Provides for non invasive neurologic monitoring - collects patient data to prevent or minimize neurologic complications.
c. Cares for patient during a seizure and the postictal state.
d. Monitors, treats and emotionally supports a patient who has ingested prescription, other drugs or alcohol beyond the therapeutic range.
e. Provides life-saving measures in life-threatening situations such as trauma care.
4. Works effectively with co-workers, providers and other departments to assist patient progress through the continuum of care under the delegation of the RN and with the provider's order as indicated for protocols, medications and diagnostic tests.
. Documentation - Records pertinent patient data in a clinical record.
a. Assists with all appropriate documentation for transfers, AMA, LWOT.
b. Protects the health care rights of a patient, especially a minor, incapacitated, or incompetent patient unable to make decisions
c. Uses technical equipment and devices to monitor patient condition or sustain life in collaboration with RN.
d. Assists with discharge planning. May provide discharge instructions to the patient as delegated by the RN.
e. Provides reassurance, acceptance and encouragement during times of stress
5. Provides age-specific, individualized care that supports protection from harm under the delegation of the registered nurse and with the provider's order for protocols, medications and diagnostic tests.
. Maintains special precautions with patient at risk for injury from falling
a. Reduces the risk for self-inflicted harm with intent to end life through appropriate risk assessment and monitoring.
b. Minimizes the acquisition and transmission of infectious agents as part of infection control.
c. Assists with application, monitoring, and removal of restraint appliances or with the seclusion process as delegated by the RN/MD.
d. Initiates interventions for the aggressive or violent patient in accordance with safety standards.
e. Vital Signs Monitoring - Collects and reports physiological monitoring data to the RN/provider to identify trends and prevent complications.
6. Acquires and maintains current knowledge and competency in paramedic role.
. Participates in ongoing educational activities related to paramedic practice or professional issues.
a. Acquires knowledge and skills appropriate to the ED paramedic.
b. Demonstrates self motivation by maintaining 12 hours educational points.
c. Seeks/maintains certification: ACLS, PALS and TEAM

o Paramedics may not administer blood products, fibrinolytics or moderate sedation.
o Paramedic cannot perform procedures, which the ED RN is unable to delegate such as intubation
