GENERAL SUMMARY:

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
- Works independently without supervision when performing the duties of job description according to the competency training, knowledge, and previous experience.
- Monitor daily workflow in the lab; directly supervise, hire, train, schedule and mentor laboratory histology staff.
- Meet regularly with direct reports. Provide coaching and constructive feedback, and career development discussions. Write and deliver performance reviews and build a positive team environment.
- Mount tissue specimens on glass slides.
- Stain tissue specimens with dyes or other chemicals to make cell details visible under microscopes.
- Cut sections of body tissues for microscopic examination using microtomes.
- Examine slides under microscopes to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements.
- Daily temperature monitoring and recording.
- Scheduling of equipment maintenance, repair, pick-up and removal.
- Coordinate pick-up and removal of hazardous and bio-hazardous waste.
- Operate computerized laboratory equipment to dehydrate, decalcify, or microincinerate tissue samples.
- Will conduct routine histology in the absence of a histotechnician.
- Identify tissue structures or cell components to be used in the diagnosis, prevention, or treatment of diseases.
- Ensure standards of CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and other applicable regulatory agencies are met.
- Ensure quality assurance, quality control, safety, and proficiency standards are met.
- Compose and edit laboratory SOPs, including safety and quality procedures.
- Monitor laboratory expenses through productivity, personnel utilization, overtime, material usagerates, and implement corrective actions.
- Negotiate contracts with vendors for laboratory equipment and supplies.
- Manage inventory and order appropriate laboratory supplies.
- Ensure licensure for testing is compliant with state/local regulations.
- Prepare for regulatory inspections to maintain licensure and ensure quality.
- Drive continuous improvement and operational efficiency.
- Provide technical feedback to staff regarding performance, documenting corrective action, and reviewing cases.
- Delegate responsibilities to staff to assure effective workflow, proper cross-training, and sufficient redundancy.
- Other duties as assigned by Director of Operations.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Proven leadership skills, excellent communication and interpersonal skills; proficient at multi-tasking, solid organizational skills and ability to be flexible.

- Speaking – Talking to others to convey information effectively.
- English Language – Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
- Medical Software – Electronic medical record software, Laboratory information system (LIS)
- Word Processing Software – Microsoft Office Suites, Outlook, etc.
- Knowledge of CLIA, JCAHO, CAP and state regulations a plus

- Bachelor's degree strongly preferred
- ASCP Certified HT
- Minimum 2-3 years of clinical laboratory experience required
- Prior supervisory experience in a high-volume lab preferred
