Job Summary:

The Underwriter is responsible for underwriting merchant processing accounts. Ensures compliance with boarding guidelines and policies and assists with other responsibilities of the underwriting team. The successful candidate will have credit/underwriting experience and knowledge, preferably within a payment processing environment. The expected skill set will include the ability to read tax returns and personal/commercial reports. 

Job Description:   

  • Merchant Underwriting: Verifies merchant application information, coordinating the collection of missing data and documentation. Analyzes and underwrites new merchant applications. Re-evaluate existing merchant accounts as requested by the other internal departments. 
  • Underwriting Remediation: Understand/Process the appropriate registrations needed for higher risk applications with Paya’s bank sponsor. Assist internal and external agents in resolving underwriting related issues. Ability to communicate adequately to ISOs, partners, etc. underwriting decision and associated policies. 
  • U/W Department: Contributes to regular staff meetings to discuss merchant accounts, trends, losses, etc. Present ideas to management for continuous improvement of procedures and efficiencies. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned.    
  • Works under direct supervision; uses little discretion; typically follows prescribe instructions, manuals or procedures; expected to seek guidance in unexpected or complex situations.   
  • Works under limited supervision; practices and process in place to guide work; completes work independently; consults with supervisor to resolve problems.    
  • Works under general direction within a clear framework of accountability; makes decisions that influence outcome of projects and/or team objectives; investigates and resolves complex issues.   
  • Works under broad direction, determines best way to accomplish projects/tasks; assigns tasks and responsibilities to others; allocates resources; implements strategy.    
  • Has authority over all aspects of significant work area; makes decisions critical to organizational success; leads formulation and implementation of strategy.   

Qualifications:

  • Associate degree required. Bachelor's degree preferred. 
  • Required: minimum of 2 years or more of experience in Underwriting 
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Must have strong interpersonal and multitasking skills
  • Must be a disciplined self-starter and demonstrate integrity, dependability, responsibility, work ethic, self-awareness, and a positive attitude

 Specialized knowledge, skills, certifications and/or training  

  • Ability to read and interpret personal and commercial credit reports.  
  • Ability to read and interpret tax returns and/or corporate financial statements.  
  • Working knowledge of the payments industry and understanding of Visa/MC association regulations and guidelines.  
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel and Word
