Grade 14 Click HERE for Salary Ranges CLOSE DATE 02/17/2023 SUMMARY Surveyor Assistants working within the Merit System are responsible for assisting Surveyors in conducting the setup of survey instruments for field measurement. They assist with monitoring potentially dangerous situations such as traffic flow on busy highways, heavy construction equipment that is in use, and other potential hazards while performing survey work. Individuals in this job class also assist in the operation of various measuring devices such as the electronic distance meter, measuring levels, or measuring tapes to gather and record the dimensions of physical objects, linear distances, etc. when conducting field surveys. Their work is performed under the direction of a Chief of Party and Surveyors and is reviewed for accuracy and completeness. TYPICAL JOB DUTIES: Conducts preliminary activities prior to setting up survey instruments so that actual survey activities can be performed. Clears obstructions to survey monument locations or survey line of sight using powered equipment in order to cut and/or trim bushes, trees, hedges, etc. Assists in locating utility lines (e.g., water, power, phone, etc.) using a pipe horn or total station so that engineers can incorporate them into the construction design. Aids in observing and/or flagging traffic as needed to ensure the safety of the crew. Sets up and operates surveying instruments in order to gather field measurements so that a preliminary, special instruction, construction, or final/as-built survey can be performed. Performs post-survey activities at the end of the day, after a project is complete, or in preparation for the next surveying assignment. Disassembles survey equipment for storage or transportation to other worksites. Checks the calibration of the instrument periodically to ensure that measurements are within the appropriate tolerance. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is primarily performed at outdoor worksites and frequently requires incumbents to work on uneven, cluttered and slippery surfaces and around moving vehicle hazards. Work may require exposure to biological and/or chemical hazards, unpleasant smells, poisonous plants and dangerous animals, reptiles, or insects. Job may also require exposure to inclement weather (e.g., extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, wind). Incumbents in this position are required to wear common protective or safety equipment such as safety shoes, safety belts, glasses, gloves, or hard hats. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Job involves physical exertion required for sustained periods of moderate physical activity such as walking on unstable ground for long distances, bending, twisting, climbing, crouching, crawling and exerting muscle force repeatedly or continuously over time. May involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs. The job may also require the ability to use one’s hands and fingers to handle and manipulate small parts such of machinery or other equipment.
