Job Summary : The role of the Sterile Technician is to ensure that all sterile areas are properly disinfected. Each sterile area will be disinfectant in a manner that is required by state and federal laws.
Also, the sterile technician will meet all PCMS, OCSP, and OLGSH requirements for cleaning all sterile areas located at OLGSH, OCSP, and any other sterile area that PCMS is responsible for disinfecting.
You the Sterile Technician will make sure that all equipment is properly disinfected before bringing any equipment in the sterile areas.
Sterile areas are operating rooms, hot rooms, and Decontam.
The following will be thoroughly cleaned daily with the proper detergent germicide Virex, Oxivir, Sani Wipes, and Oxivir Wipes;
each using the proper dwell times. Terminally clean all sterile areas.
- All walls are washed daily with proper disinfectant.
- Ceiling is properly disinfected.
- All lights are properly disinfected and placed back in their proper position.
- All Furniture & Equipment including Wheels / casters.
- Kick buckets & waste receptacles.
- Shelves of carts, tables, & cabinets.
- Procedure room stands & IV poles.
- SCD machines.
- Wires all the way to the ceiling.
- Bed Extensions.
- Foot Stools.
- IV pumps / Poles.
- Operating bed. Bed must be broken down and disinfected daily. Bed must be move to mop fulling under the Bed and when floor dries place back where you found the operating bed.
Plug operating bed back into outlet. Ensure all bolt holes are properly clean. Bed must be raised up to its full height disinfected and then let back down.
Ensure base is fully disinfected. Blood often times is at the base of the bed .
- Anesthesia machines & Carts.
- Vents are to be cleaned daily. Do not block vents with any equipment.
- All vents including Decontam vents are cleaned daily.
- All doors and door frames are disinfected daily.
- All doors are closed after cleaning.
- All floors need to be properly swept, dust mopped, and water mopped with proper chemicals daily. All betadine must be removed.
- All sterile area must be disinfectant in the same manner every time we clean them. There is never a task that is not completed.
- Decontam must be terminally clean nightly as well.
- The entire floor of each procedure room will be cleaned with a clean mop head soaked in the detergent germicide and the entire room thoroughly cleaned.
- All floor mats are cleaned inside and out. Once dried then they are placed back in place after the floor has been cleaned.
- Walls are cleaned daily.
- Scrub sinks are thoroughly cleaned. All areas of each sub-sterile room are cleaned with a detergent germicide solution.
- Equipment in hallways and end of hall storage areas will also be cleaned daily.
- Care will be taken to NOT change settings on machines when cleaning / wiping.
- Equipment will be moved with caution to enable thorough cleaning with care taken to NOT disconnect wires, leads, & hoses.
- All equipment will be placed back in the place that it was found.
- Ceilings are cleaned daily.
- In addition to mopping the O.R. daily, once weekly the floor of each O.R. is cleaned with an automatic scrubbing machine and appropriate germicide solution.
Currently this is being done on Friday’s.
- All foot petals on sins must be cleaned and disinfected.
- Proper Surgical PPE was be worn before entering the restricted sterile areas.
- Common duties include mopping, vacuuming, and sweeping floors; cleaning windows and dusting furniture; washing and changing linens on patients' beds;
and ensuring that all waste is disposed of properly. You can also expect to empty trash cans, replace the supplies in bathrooms and move items around as needed.
Your cleaning duties will require a lot of time standing, as well as a lot of time bending and lifting things, so being physically able to perform these tasks is essential.
For your safety, it's important to wear safety gear; to know how to operate equipment properly, and to know how to use the proper cleaning supplies to avoid injuries.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities :
- Clean hospital floors and surfaces using predefined cleaning methods and procedures
- Mix appropriate quantities of cleaning liquids and chemicals in accordance with state safety regulations
- Dust, mop and sweep patients’ room, nurses and surgical units and administrative offices
- Make beds using clean and disinfected linen and replenish supplies such as towels, blankets, soaps, and shampoos
- Clean and disinfect patients’ bathroom and public restrooms.
- Disinfect and sanitize operating rooms
- Clean mirrors and windows along with polishing fittings and fixtures
- Distribute clean linen and hospital / surgical gowns to appropriate floors
- Inform housekeeping supervisor of any cleaning equipment that may need repair or replacement
- Inform housekeeping supervisor about any building hazard and assist in addressing it
- Maintain a clean and organized storage area for cleaning equipment and supplies
Mandatory Requirements :
- Good Communication skills.
- Ability to work the facility cleaning schedule.
- Complete knowledge of Housekeeping cleaning protocols.
- Complete knowledge of cleaning techniques, products, and principles.
