About this Role: We are seeking a highly motivated Construction Laborer who performs tasks involving physical labor at underground utility construction projects, operating a variety of hand and power tools, and assisting in various construction-related tasks. The Construction Laborer will be based in Austin, Texas, and the position is non-exempt.

Characteristics Duties and Responsibilities:

The construction laborer performs tasks involving physical labor at underground utility construction projects. The position may operate a variety of hand and power tools and may clean and prepare sites, dig trenches, set braces to support the sides of excavations, erect scaffolding, clean up rubble and debris, and remove waste materials. The position may assist other skilled workers at the site and company yard.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs a variety of tasks involving strenuous manual labor in underground utility construction projects; performs manual work in preparing the site for the contracted scope of work.
  • Shovels dirt, concrete, asphalt, and various other construction materials into construction areas.
  • Excavates and fills trenches and ditches.
  • Maintains a clean job site: picks up and delivers all tools and equipment and secures the job site each day to eliminate potential hazards.
  • Performs materials handling and storage.
  • Loads and unloads trucks and hauls and hoists materials.
  • Ensures that proper safety and incident reporting procedures are followed. Brings problems to the attention of the foreman, safety director, or supervisor.
  • Work hours begin at 7:00 am.
  • Assist pipe layer, equipment operator, and foreman as needed.
  • Traffic control flagging as needed.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Education: High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience: Five years heavy equipment operation.
  • Certifications/Licenses: OSHA 30 preferred, minimum OSHA 10 accepted.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time position. 40 hours per week with an opportunity for overtime. This position typically involves standard business hours, it may frequently require flexibility, including long hours, weekend work, night work, overtime and remaining on-call.

Physical Demands: The job involves various physical activities, including sitting, standing, walking, driving, climbing ladders, squatting, kneeling, reaching, grasping, pushing, pulling, twisting, bending, lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs. multiple times per shift, using fingers, talking, listening, and maintaining visual awareness.

Work Environment: The work environment involves an equal balance of indoor and outdoor settings. There may be potential exposure to extreme hot or cold temperatures for periods exceeding one hour. Workers may experience distracting or uncomfortable noise levels and vibrations affecting the body or extremities. There is a risk of bodily injury from mechanical parts and electricity. Additionally, there's a possibility of exposure to fumes, odors, or other substances that may impact respiration and skin.
