Job Summary
Provides coordination and management of medical staff or clinician peer review infrastructure, processes, and projects. Maintains oversight of the case review process, including preparing case summaries and timelines, follow-up with reviewers, and tracking trends to ensure a robust review in alignment with PeaceHealth policy.
Essential Functions
- Serves as a resource consultant to medical staff or PeaceHealth Medical Group clinicians regarding all peer review case analysis. Acts as a subject matter expert on medical staff peer review policies.
- Investigates and reviews reports and medical charts to determine appropriateness of patient care that would warrant a physician peer review. Builds case summaries to reflect technical, procedural, medical, surgical and system concerns to support quality care objectives. Maintains oversight of the case review process, including preparing case summaries and timelines, following up with reviewers, and tracking trends, to ensure a robust review in alignment with medical staff bylaws. Ensures continued forward movement of case reviews in compliance with policy guidelines for completion of review from initial identification to final disposition within 90 days.
- Creates design of plan for peer review access database by defining and facilitating all enhancements working closely with Data Administrator. Acts as case flow process expert within Safe2Share software, providing individualized support to medical staff.
- Gathers, analyzes, and presents performance data to identify opportunities for improvements related to key objectives. Recognizes performance trends, statistical significance, and elevates concerns to medical staff leadership for review and intervention. Implements and integrates system and community process improvements in support of peer review process.
- Facilitates the sharing of lessons learned from the case review process with other members of the medical staff to continuously improve the quality and safety of the care they provide. Supports provider Continuing Medical Education program through educational presentations.
- Develops and presents imaging and all electronic patient records needed for case discussions and to reflect system concerns in support of quality care objectives.
- Co-facilitates M&M and case conferences. Includes gathering cases for presentation, developing agendas and documenting discussion. Ensures follow through on action items.
- Develops and maintains strong collaborative working relationships with hospital, medical group, and medical staff leaders. Collaborates with a high functioning team of medical staff peer review coordinators in the pursuit of providing superior patient care across the care continuum. Develop and present imaging and all electronic patient records needed for case discussions and to reflect system concerns in support of quality care objectives.
- Develops and prepares reports and presentations on clinical outcome reviews for medical staff committees, MEC and the Board or Medical Group executive team.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education
- Required: Bachelor's Degree Nursing. or related field, with a focus on analytics or informatics preferred
- Master's Degree Preferred.
- Required: 3 years of clinical nursing experience
- Required: 2 years Quality Improvement project management and/or change management experience
- Required: Peer review coordination/experience
- Preferred: Two years recent Risk/Quality Improvement experience in an acute care facility.
- Preferred: Prior clinical acute care case management experience
- Required: Registered Nurse in state of practice
- Preferred: Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality or Certified Professional in Patient Safety
- Proficient with MS Office applications. (Required)
- Project management skills. (Required)
- Knowledge of DNV (or equivalent), CMS and Department of Health standards. (Preferred)
- Knowledge of the medical staff bylaws, rules/regulations and policies. (Required)
- Basic statistical experience; must be able to operationalize statistical and database concepts. (Required)
- Multi-specialty nursing background. (Preferred)
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of highly sensitive information (Required)
- Ability to make independent judgments and pay close attention to details. (Preferred)
Lifting
- Patient handling no greater than 35 lbs. without the use of assistive equipment and/or devices (NIOSH).
- Fine motor skills to be able to grasp and control medical equipment and perform precise procedures.
- Push/Pull: Frequently up to 45 lbs. force (i.e., WOW, medical carts).
- Perform hands on CPR at least 20 mins using 100-125 lbs. of force (National Assoc. of EMS Physicians and AHA) Frequency should be seldom or occasionally.
- Ability to move around area with frequent sitting.
- Bending/ stooping/ squatting/ reaching/ kneeling frequently.
- Lifting (non-patient) up to 20 lbs. occasionally and 5 lbs. frequently.
- Exposure to biohazard, body fluids and airborne particles.
- Must be able to complete tasks in a noisy environment.
- Vision and hearing required within normal limits (glasses, contacts, hearing aids permitted).
- Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information.
