The Scrum Master supports the scrum team’s delivery of value through product increments to meet sprint goals, program increment (PI) goals, and the organization’s strategic goals. This requires facilitation of scrum ceremonies and inspect & adapt events as well as support for the team in preparation for PI ceremonies. During sprints, the Scrum Master will anticipate and remove the team’s impediments while also navigating conflict to enable the team’s success in delivery. When working with the teams, the Scrum Master uses servant leadership to empower the team to self-organize, become cross-functional, enable flow, and to encourage the team to reach high performance.
The Scrum Master also leads the team and organization to build agile maturity. The Scrum Master coaches, guides, and trains the team on agile principles, values, and the scrum framework. The Scrum Master also assists in the education of stakeholders, managers, and leaders to increase understanding and support of the agile framework in order to effectively execute on strategic goals.
Essential Job Functions
- Coaches, educates, and guides the team and organization on Scrum practices, values, and Agile principles
- Supports and facilitates sprint execution for value delivery
- Supports the team in creating and adhering to a team working agreement, definition of done, and definition of ready
- Encourages transparency by helping the team to make work visible
- Guards the Agile team from external disruptions
- Anticipates and removes any obstacles that could prevent the team from delivering value
- Ensures all Scrum ceremonies take place and are effective
- Guides and facilitates team preparation for PI Planning and PI Demos
- Acts as a change agent and adapts processes to maximize productivity of the team
- Supports work breakdown by guiding the Agile team on creation and sizing of user stories and features
- Drafts, updates, and tracks Team Agile metrics
- Facilitates the follow-up on improvement items gathered from retrospectives
- Coordinates inter-team dependencies and cooperation
- Promotes continuous improvement and inspect & adapt
- Supports and educates product management on product backlog maintenance
Required
- Minimum of 1-3 years of experience working on Agile projects or product teams
- Experience as a Scrum Master or Kanban Master
Preferred
- Bachelor degree preferred, Associate Degree with equivalent experience considered
Certifications & Licences
- Foundational Agile Certification preferred
- Certified Scrum Master or Kanban Master other Scrum Master certification, preferred
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Basic knowledge of:
- Scaled agile framework (SAFe®) and agile methodology
Basic skill in:
- Teamwork, facilitation, relationship building, and negotiation
- Skill in leadership and team building
- Executing the Agile life cycle
- Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work while meeting multiple deadlines
