POSITION PURPOSE:
The purpose of this position it to coach gymnasts on PGC’s competitive teams which includes (our recreational competitive team), XCEL Silver-Platinum, and Women’s Developmental Program levels 3-10 while adhering to all USAG and Safe Sport guidelines. You will lead the events for the group assigned to you based on the schedule made by the head coach. As a team coach your primary concerns are safety, teaching correct technique, and helping your athletes reach their full potential as gymnasts.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Fostering a safe, fun, and supportive environment to provide an enjoyable experience for all athletes.
- Preparing the gymnasts to be successful during the competition season.
- Teaching good technique as a foundation to build off when your gymnasts are learning new skills or upgrading.
- Ensuring the safety of the athletes by teaching correct technique, correcting incorrect technique, building the athlete’s strength, setting up drills or ways to help the athletes correctly learn skills, and spotting or physically assisting (spotting) athletes.
- Helping gymnasts at all skill levels build confidence in themselves and their athletic abilities.
- Creating a positive atmosphere in the gym.
- Organizing a practice appropriate to the skill level of the gymnasts.
- Facilitating gymnasts’ growth through flexibility and stretching, strength, and rehab as well as practicing skills.
- Being reliable which entails always coming early (at least 15 min prior) to your scheduled lessons and coming prepared and communicating with the rest of the PGC staff ASAP should any conflicts arise to help secure coverage in your absence or lateness.
- Ensuring all athletes have left the gym safely after practice.
- Ensure gym is in working order for the next activity after practice.
- Evaluate the skill level of each athlete so that they can be placed in the appropriate level.
- Communicate with the head coach if any issues arise and collaborate on determining the appropriate next steps.
- Refining your gymnasts’ skills so they can reach their full athletic potential.
- Be a positive member of the PGC staff by respecting other staff members, attending meetings or trainings as required, arriving on time, and wearing proper attire.
- Encourage growth in character traits such as perseverance, discipline, respect, and confidence.
- Holistically develop athletes.
- Engaging in good sportsmanship.
ROLE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:
- High School diploma, GED, or equivalent. 18 years old or older.
- Expertise in gymnastics which can be reflected or obtained in 3 years of prior instructing experience and/or years of experience as a competitive gymnast.
- Preferably 3 years of experience in coaching gymnastics.
- Ability to sustain concentration and attention throughout practices sessions and/or clinics.
- Ability to be on your feet and physically mobile throughout practices sessions and/or clinics..
- Preferably be able to lift at least 50lbs to safely and correctly physically assist (spot) athletes.
- Proper USAG and Safe Sport certifications (can be completed after hiring).
- Willingness to work mornings, afternoons, nights, and possibly weekends.
- Experience with young athletes preferred.
- Have a positive attitude.
- Preferably CPR and First Aid certified.
