Summary: Reporting to the Cellar Supervisor, will participate in the work of a small crew performing winery cellar duties including, but not limited to, grape receipt, crushing, additions, pressing, filling, and topping, as well as wine movement and the operation of winery machinery (especially forklift) under safety guidelines. Works independently and in a team by prioritizing projects, assigning work task, using equipment, maintaining records, monitoring work quality, developing work schedules, ensuring crew safety, training employees, and providing performance feedback. May lead at least one shift during harvest period.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operates pumps to receive juice, perform pump-overs and racking’s, and blend final products.
  • Prepares additions for pitching, fining, filtering, and finishing products for juice and wine.
  • Maintains and prepares barrels for storage and/or filling.
  • Handles grape/juice deliveries.
  • Makes chemical additions to juice and wine; moving hoses and equipment.
  • Safe, proficient, and efficient operation of a forklift to move tanks, barrels, and equipment.
  • Operates crusher, presses, and other standard winery equipment.
  • Collects wine/juice samples and general support for the laboratory.
  • Directly responsible for maintaining quality standards in all areas of wine production.
  • Adheres to and advances good safety practices.
  • Maintains and confirms a sanitary and micro-biologically stable work environment, including Tank/Hose CIP.
  • Cleaning, sanitizing, and sterilizing all winery equipment and facilities.
  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Able to lead small teams, especially during harvest.
  • Able to multi-task.

  • Forklift Skills – Displays proficiency, efficiency, and safety in use of forklift on a daily basis. This includes the safe and efficient movement of barrels, bins, totes, and other winery equipment.


Qualifications:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be a minimum of 21 years of age, able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and /or ability required. Education and/or Experience:
High School diploma or equivalent; minimum 2 years cellar experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Have knowledge of wine movement procedures. Must be proficient and efficient at forklift operation.


Language Skills:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Conversational English required, Spanish helpful.


Mathematical Skills:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide.


Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and proof of current auto insurance. Enroll in company’s DMV pull notice program. Certified forklift operator.

The employee required to clearly see, talk, hear, feel, taste, and smell. The employee is frequently required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and climb or balance, and work at elevated heights. The employee must able to read and understand measurements for tank gauging, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; occasional move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Working conditions vary as most of the work described herein is performed outdoors. Therefore, wet, windy, dry, hot, cold, dusty and unpredictable working conditions may apply every day. Extensive travel is necessary. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Occasional lead of 2 to 5 people. Leadership experience helpful including communication, motivation, and giving and receiving constructive feedback. Some knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations related to leading a crew is also helpful.

Salary : $36,300 - $46,000
