Job Summary: The Intake Counselor will engage with individuals who are experiencing a mental health crisis and conduct clinical mental health assessments and interventions to determine treatment needs for individuals with mental health and/or co-occurring substance use disorders. They will also assess the needs of people and ensure their referral to the service or resource that best addresses those needs. They will link recipients to appropriate resources or care providers and facilitate the transfer of those patients to appropriate locations; to admit based on Admission Criteria and Medical Necessity as well as to provide a smooth compassionate admission process for patients and their families.
Responsibilities:
- Handles all referrals for services, schedules assessments, and/or refers patients to appropriate community resources
- Counsels’ clients and patients, individually, to assist in overcoming stressors, adjusting to life, and making changes.
- Collects information about clients through interviews, observations, and tests.
- Conduct effective crisis assessments, triage, and stabilization
- Completes pre-certification with insurance companies to authorize patients' hospitalization
- Works with nursing, medical, and other disciplines to coordinate care for patients
- Monitors and assists patients, working under the direction of clinical, nursing, and medical staff including areas of daily living and activities.
- Record and maintain patient information, such as vital signs, eating habits, behavior, and daily observation notes.
- Develops and implements treatment plans.
- Assist with intake and assessment information.
- Under the direction of professional staff, redirect or restrain patients using CPI techniques to prevent injury to themselves or others.
- Promptly reports any issues to the nursing manager on duty.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by professional staff
SKILLS:
- Strong working knowledge of DSM-V criteria, community resources, assessment and crisis intervention required.
- Experience in a behavioral healthcare hospital setting required.
- Ability to collaborate with an interdisciplinary team and community partners.
- Sensitivity to racial, cultural, economic, and gender- specific issues with a willingness to adapt interventions to meet differing needs
- May be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Good computer, written and verbal skills to communicate with people of diverse backgrounds and educational levels and to prepare reports.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
- BA in social work, psychology, or related fields
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification required.
- A minimum of two (2) years’ experience working in a psychiatric setting

- CPI Certification needed or be trained
- Required Clearances: Pennsylvania Act 33 & 34 clearance
