Laboratory Technologists are professional health caregivers who assist in the delivery of patient care through laboratory processes. He/she must have the ability to perform instrument maintenance, calibrations and QC. He/she acts as a liaison between patient, provider, staff, and reference laboratories. He/she must be able to prioritize work and maintain a professional demeanor under stress. The Laboratory Technologist is responsible for the application of and contribution to the goals and objectives of Piedmont Family Practice.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities
TEST PERFORMANCE:
- Accurately performs testing by consistently performing and documenting all related quality control, and calibration procedures related to the testing in the assigned areas of clinical laboratory.
- Accurately corrects any errors with appropriate documentation and communicates the error and correction to healthcare provider and then gives the correction and documentation to the supervisor and/or administrative laboratory director.
- Calls and requires read back of all critical values, documenting the test, the value, name of the individual taking the call and reading back the result, date, and time of call.
- Evaluates all delta flagged results, analyzing the reason and referring all unresolved results/issues to the supervisor for timely resolution.
- Accurately performs all tests respecting and prioritizing work based on test order priority.
- Knows and follows procedures relating to normal ranges and panic values for neonatal, pediatric, adult and geriatric patients.
- Performs and documents all quality control testing with evaluation of results based upon published frequency of performance and acceptable ranges.
- Reads and documents knowledge of all procedures and policies as they are distributed within the laboratory and office
SPECIMEN COLLECTION/PREPARATION:
- Ensures that all specimens have the correct name and date of birth (DOB).
- Receives specimens ensuring that all requisition and specimen patient identifiers are present, complete, correct and match.
- Processes all specimens appropriately for analysis and according to standard written standard operating procedures.
- Ensures that all aliquots from specimens are accurately labeled with the patient name and date of birth (DOB).
- Accurately evaluates quality of all specimens using standard operating procedures.
- Documents all unacceptable specimens and communicates with appropriate healthcare provider
- Is knowledgeable in the processing area and is able to correctly send specimens to outside reference laboratories
GENERAL WORK HABITS:
- Observes established safety procedures and OSHA regulations for blood borne pathogens and consistent use of personal protective equipment provided by lab
- Responsible for appropriate assessment and documentation of lab requisitions, insurance information, daily logs and QC of instrumentation
- Responsible for telephone triage, including appropriate documentation, advice and follow-up as it relates to lab tests or results
- Facilitate and assist in the preparation and maintenance of a certified lab area according to CLIA and COLA guidelines
- Maintaining current supplies in the lab for continuum of lab testing utilizing supply order management
COMMUNICATION/CUSTOMER SERVICE:
- Employ positive customer service skills both with internal and external customers
- Relate to fellow workers and supervisors in a professional manner
- Maintain open lines of communication between providers, and other Piedmont Family Practice employees
Minimum Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Experience: At least 2 years of laboratory experience in a clinical setting.
Certification: None required
Physical Demands
Must be physically capable for withstanding long hours on his/her feet. Must be able to lift 30 pounds from floor.
