- Evaluation and Design for intersection improvements throughout the county, including stop controlled, signalized intersections and roundabouts.
- Support of county-wide objectives like Vision Zero, ADA Transition Plan, Safe Routes to School, and the Active Transportation Plan.
- Coordination with WSDOT and other jurisdictions on impactful projects within Pierce County, including Complete Streets, trails, and pedestrian safety improvements.

Core Daily Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and direction to assigned professional and technical staff responsible for traffic engineering programs and functions.
- Perform professional traffic engineering work, including routine and comprehensive traffic engineering studies.
- Assist the Traffic Engineering Manager in leading and directing the operations of the Traffic Section.
- Develop, implement, and review ongoing programs, policies, procedures, and practices in the traffic engineering section.
- Review road improvement plans to determine requirements for traffic control devices, and number and type of traffic lanes.
- Oversee the review of proposed land use developments for possible traffic impacts on the County road system, and the development of recommendations for mitigating measures and conditions for development.
- Make recommendations on matters relative to the placement of traffic signs, signals, and pavement markings.
- Study, analyze, and prepare engineering-related reports as required by state, federal and local authorities, present findings verbally or in writing to county staff, officials, or other agencies.
- Supervise designs of proposed physical traffic facilities such as roadway channelization, striping, and traffic islands.
- Complete reviews and evaluations of employee job performance; initiate disciplinary action when necessary; respond to grievances at the first level.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- A resume and cover letter are required for this position.
- Bachelor’s degree with major course work in civil engineering or closely related field, with a specialization in traffic and transportation engineering.
- Five or more years’ experience in traffic and transportation engineering.
- Certification as a Professional Engineer by the State of Washington required.
- Certification as a Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) preferred.
