Position Summary

As a seasoned Engineer with a strong skill set in the fundamentals of traffic engineering and design, you will have the opportunity to design traffic elements of capital improvement projects, perform traffic-related development review, and lead signal coordination and timing plans. You will be a front-line supervisor with the traffic engineering team in the Office of the County Engineer where you will have the opportunity to mentor and lead your team to success.

Projects You May Support Include

  • Evaluation and Design for intersection improvements throughout the county, including stop controlled, signalized intersections and roundabouts.
  • Support of county-wide objectives like Vision Zero, ADA Transition Plan, Safe Routes to School, and the Active Transportation Plan.
  • Coordination with WSDOT and other jurisdictions on impactful projects within Pierce County, including Complete Streets, trails, and pedestrian safety improvements.

How to be Successful in the Role:

We are looking for a professional engineering supervisor who can move with ease between changing priorities. You will need exceptional communication skills and the ability to collaborate with the development community, internal stakeholders, and transportation partners at WSDOT and neighboring jurisdictions. We will depend on you to provide clear direction to your team and to ensure that our work is completed timely and with high quality.

Core Daily Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and direction to assigned professional and technical staff responsible for traffic engineering programs and functions.
  • Perform professional traffic engineering work, including routine and comprehensive traffic engineering studies.
  • Assist the Traffic Engineering Manager in leading and directing the operations of the Traffic Section.
  • Develop, implement, and review ongoing programs, policies, procedures, and practices in the traffic engineering section.
  • Review road improvement plans to determine requirements for traffic control devices, and number and type of traffic lanes.
  • Oversee the review of proposed land use developments for possible traffic impacts on the County road system, and the development of recommendations for mitigating measures and conditions for development.
  • Make recommendations on matters relative to the placement of traffic signs, signals, and pavement markings.
  • Study, analyze, and prepare engineering-related reports as required by state, federal and local authorities, present findings verbally or in writing to county staff, officials, or other agencies.
  • Supervise designs of proposed physical traffic facilities such as roadway channelization, striping, and traffic islands.
  • Complete reviews and evaluations of employee job performance; initiate disciplinary action when necessary; respond to grievances at the first level.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A resume and cover letter are required for this position.
  • Bachelor’s degree with major course work in civil engineering or closely related field, with a specialization in traffic and transportation engineering.
  • Five or more years’ experience in traffic and transportation engineering.
  • Certification as a Professional Engineer by the State of Washington required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification as a Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) preferred.

Compensation for this position is from $125,555.75 to $169,394.48 annually.
