Position Title: EDUCATIONAL AUDIOLOGIST

Reports To: Director of Exceptional Children's Program or Designee

Supervises: May supervise professionals, undergraduate and graduate interns, paraprofessionals and/or clerical staff.

Term of Employment: 10 month

NATURE OF WORK

The Educational Audiologist works to identify students with hearing loss that adversely is impacting a student’s educational progress. An educational audiologist is responsible for: (1) hearing screenings and diagnostic testing for students Pre-K through 12th grade, (2) participating in IEP/504 meetings as both an advocate and team member to ensure appropriate accommodations for students with hearing impairments, (3) conducting mass hearing screenings, (4) recommending Hearing Assistive Technology as needed, (5) providing in-service training to staff regarding student needs and equipment use, (6) as needed helps to maintain/troubleshoot equipment, (6) maintain records, (7) take ear impressions, (8) serves as a community resource to educate the public about hearing loss and the academic impact of hearing loss. Additionally, the Educational Audiologist maintains relationships with the local university training programs to offer internships to Audiology Doctoral graduate students and provides the field site supervision.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • Doctorate in Clinical Audiology (Au.D.) or equivalent
  • Certificate of Clinical Competency or the ability to obtain this certification

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Pre-K through 12th grade screenings and diagnostic testing
  • Mass screenings- make appropriate referrals as needed
  • Advocate for Hearing Impaired students, educate staff regarding hearing loss and impacts academically
  • Serve as an IEP/504 team member to advocate for the hearing impaired student’s needs with regards to accommodations and modifications
  • Select and provide appropriate assistive technology for students based on hearing loss and/or personal equipment.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and make adjustments and repairs, in collaboration with private fitting audiologist
  • Monitor classroom noise levels and make recommendations for reducing noise levels to improve listening for all students
  • Deliver equipment and in-service teachers and staff for HI students
  • Coordinate communication between medical providers and educational team regarding hearing status and needs
  • Attend district meetings as needed
  • Serve as a resource to the community for all students regarding hearing loss and the personal impacts of hearing loss.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Pediatric Audiology, testing procedures and protocols
  • General knowledge of computers.
  • Knowledge of HAT: specifically HAT used by/with students who are Hearing Impaired
  • Ability to communicate with users to determine the nature of problems
  • Ability to communicate effectively with users who may not be adept in clarifying problem situations
  • Ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with outside agencies and families regarding referrals, release of information, and scheduling appointments
  • Ability to train teachers in the use of equipment
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to walk long distances, carry and set up equipment (towers) and microphones all over school campuses in a timely manner
  • Ability to walk long distances while supervising students on school campuses when picking up or accompanying students for testing
