What are the responsibilities and job description for the Site Manager position at Ports America?
At Ports America, the Site Manager provides leadership and direction to the Port of New Orleans, Shipping Customers and Terminal Operators in the planning for the overall crane usage, operation, and maintenance. The incumbent will direct and supervise the work of PONO Crane Management and ILA Crane Operators ensuring an efficient, safe, and productive operation. The Site Manager will be held accountable for achieving operational and financial goals while remaining within specified budget guidelines.
Essential Duties:
- Ensures that the PONO maintains and repairs the gantry cranes in a timely and cost-effective manner, with consideration given to quality and longer duration of equipment.
- Develops and maintains professional customer and port relations by identifying and meeting customer needs.
- Ensures that staff and labor demonstrate customer service principles.
- Develops short- and long-term business plans designed to achieve company goals and objectives.
- Develops and operates within approved fiscal budget limits, ensuring targeted P&L results.
- Supervising the maintenance and repair of all quay cranes, rubber tire gantry cranes, spreaders, and its supporting equipment and parts (electrical, electronic, and mechanical).
- Ensure that the equipment is maintained in a safe and reliable working condition, in accordance with planned preventive maintenance program and to identify and rectify repetitive problems.
- Monitors warranties and ensure claims under warranty are filed.
- Ensure that any PONO breakdowns are corrected and documented promptly and to make sure that follow-up work is undertaken.
- Ensures that repair work does not adversely affect the services to the customer.
- Liaise with planning for the scheduling of maintenance program and to provide feedback with a goal to continual improvement with the PONO.
- Recommend and develop equipment overall and improvement modification to the PONO.
- Assist the PONO by supervising subcontractors work on-site and any major projects or repairs.
- Offers direction and instruction to subordinate staff, providing regular feedback.
- Ensures safety procedures are followed and safety gear is used appropriately.
- Ensures that area accident prevention / safety and workers' compensation programs and procedures are implemented. Ensure safety of all equipment and take corrective action where necessary.
- Counsels’ subordinates, up to and including discipline or termination recommendations.
- Ensures that technical knowledge of staff is updated as needed.
- Follows Labor contract requirements with respect to union personnel.
- Follows company management policies and procedures in the application of managing subordinates.
- Manages department budget within guidelines and annual goals.
- Provides complete and accurate reports to management.
- Ensures high levels of productivity and efficiency by assessing operational practices and procedures, and by developing and executing appropriate plans, and directing the stevedoring and terminal activities.
- Works closely with planners, superintendents, vessel operators and their agents in developing efficient and appropriate plans to load / unload vessels.
- Evaluates and determines appropriate labor and equipment requirements for each vessel, ensuring availability of labor, and that equipment is available and in efficient and safe working condition.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 10 years of general supervisory experience in Crane maintenance section in any ports, construction, and/or manufacturing plants
- 4-year college degree in engineering, with a solid foundation in mechanical, electrical and structural engineering.
- Experience may be substituted for educational requirements at the college level.
- Budgeting and profit and loss management experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- Requires specific technical knowledge of maintenance and repair of quay cranes, rubber-tired gantry cranes, spreaders, in general.
- Knowledge of general engineering principles covering mechanical, electrical, and structural engineering.
- Requires overall general knowledge of terminal and stevedoring operations, especially the coordination of cranes with vessel activity.
- Must be able to interpret engineering drawings, layouts, and specifications.
- Requires a wide range of knowledge in PLC and drive control systems and overall container cranes’ control and mechanical system.
- Must have a working knowledge of supervisory and leadership principles, with the ability to influence other team members in a positive way and lead a department of trades workers.
- Solid knowledge of applicable federal, state, and company safety regulations; Must be familiar with OSHA, National Electrical Code, and all other regulations, such as welding and electrical standards, that are required, both locally and at the state and federal level.
- Thorough knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations.
- Requires a high level of planning and organizational skills, with high attention to detail.
- Requires the ability to organize multiple projects.
- Requires excellent problem-solving skills, especially technical problems of a highly complex nature.
- Requires good verbal and written communications skills in English.
- Requires the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management, labor, and customers.
- Good interpersonal skills and a strong internal customer focus.
- Solid management/team-building skills, preferably in a union environment; exposure to or experience with union contracts.
- As the senior manager of this critical part of our facility, you must also be skilled in working collaboratively with operating management and personnel, financial and commercial managers.
- A strong understanding of IT/systems utilization in the engineering and maintenance arenas.
- Requires ability to use computerized software system(s), specifically those designed for maintenance and repair of cranes.
- Exceptional time management, due to fast-moving, demanding work environment.
- Requires ability to respond quickly and thoughtfully in a fast-paced environment.
- Requires the ability to respond to equipment emergencies outside of normal work shifts.
Physical Working Attributes:
- Frequent walking, standing, bending, occasional sitting.
- Climb up and down a ladder multiple times within a shift
- Work on a ship and in a yard.
- Work in changing hot and cold climates based on weather conditions.
