What are the responsibilities and job description for the General Manager position at Powers Gymnastics?

Job Summary

Powers Gymnastics, a multi-gym operator in Greater Phoenix, is offering a highly compensated career opportunity in youth sports to fill the role of General Manager. We are looking for a leader that is independent, customer oriented, and passionate about making a positive impact on young athletes. To accomplish this, you will be responsible for all aspects of the business, including managing the coaches, running the front office, and building relationships with our customers.

Depending on experience this position will receive a base salary of $80,000 and does include an excellent benefits package.

Job Responsibilities

Create a culture of positivity, enjoyment, and safety — Powers Gymnastics strives to provide a different environment than the typical win-at-all-costs training center. We want every student to feel better about themselves when they leave the gym than when they arrived, from the Preschool Gymnastics to the high-level competitive gymnasts. As the General Manager, you will be responsible for maintaining that culture by constantly checking in with coaches and parents about students’ progress, enjoyment, and wellbeing. You will also oversee communication that furthers this goal such as progress reports and safety procedures.

Manage the day-to-day operations of the gym — The General Manager is responsible for making sure the gym is running as intended and for opening the facility on time every day. You will:

  • Work closely with the coaches to confirm they are following the lesson plans.
  • Talk with parents about their student’s progress, payments, and injuries.
  • Make sure the equipment is safe and in good condition.
  • Ensure the facility is clean and presentable.
  • Attract, register, and enroll new students.

Be the face of the gym — As General Manager, you will be running the gym from the front desk during business hours. You will be the first person that students and parents see every day when they walk through the door. This is crucial because while the kid’s relationship is with their coach, the parent’s relationship is with the General Manager at the front desk. Since the parents actually pay the bills, that relationship is extremely important. At the front desk you are the head salesperson, and the one that has the biggest impact on retention and enrolling new customers.

Hire, train, and retain coaches — The product we are selling is an hour of a coach’s time, so it is extremely important that the General Manager does a great job of developing and retaining talented coaches. Your most important responsibility will be to directly oversee the lifecycle of a coach, from hiring to training to making sure that every day they have what they need to provide the best possible experience for the students.

Organize and manage special events — In addition to scheduled classes, the gym puts on special events to add value to parents and students while creating great marketing content. Examples include a Mini-Olympics for students to show off what they’ve learned, a Parents’ Night Out to give mom and dad a few hours to themselves, or a Spooktober party to celebrate one of our favorite holidays. As the General Manager, you will be in charge of creating, organizing, and running these events.

Be accountable for administrative compliance — While it’s not the most exciting part of the job, it is critical that the General Manager keeps well organized records and documentation of all necessary aspects of the business. This includes ensuring that employee onboarding is properly completed, documenting injuries for insurance, managing workers compensation incidents, sending in biweekly payroll reports, and other key administrative tasks.

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree (Required)

At least three years of relevant experience (Required)

Six Months Paid Training Plan

As a new GM with Powers Gymnastics, your first 3 months of employment will be spent out on the floor learning how to coach gymnastics and Ninja Warrior classes. The remaining 3 months will be spent learning the day-to-day responsibilities of the General Manager role.

Schedule and Benefits

The schedule for this position will be 12:00 PM - 8:00 PM Monday through Friday, and 8:00 AM - 2:00 PM on Saturday. This allows you to be at the gym during all business hours while also having time before opening to complete administrative tasks.

While the General Manager must be there when the gym is open, to ensure a great work life balance you will receive 4 – 5 weeks of time off during scheduled gym closures. This includes weeklong closures for 4th of July, Thanksgiving, and the end of December, and single day closures / long weekends for other Federal holidays.

The General Manager will receive 80% company paid health, dental, and vision insurance.

We believe it’s critical to invest in the growth and development of our employees, so we cover the costs of travel and attendance to events such as the National Congress, Olympic Trials, and other training clinics.
