Job Summary: The position of Quality Control Technician ensures that proper methods are being followed, finished product complies with specified requirements, and it establishes evidence of proper manufacture and quality of our concrete products.
The Quality Control system of records provides full information regarding the testing of materials, tensioning strand, and placing/curing concrete, inspection of finished products, camber, dimensions, and concrete strengths. Information gained through quality control inspection should be reviewed on a daily basis with production personnel. This review should identify any areas that may need production procedures reinforced or modified, or equipment that needs to be prepared or replaced.
Description of Responsibilities:
Quality Control
- Gather cylinders from previous production day, cool down and break for release strengths.
- Review shop drawings for upcoming production day, note any changes and add up dimensions for accuracy.
- If product passes then gather shipping and 28-day cylinders and store: gather heat charts.
- Record strengths on previous day's concrete report, mix design report and daily fabrication sheet.
- Notify proper personnel if any changes need to be made to mix, for cost efficiency, and make adjustments
- Monitor detensioning process.
- When product is removed; mark beams; includes job number, mark number, date cast and beam number, red tag beams, check actual cast measurements, take initial camber, map all cracks and mark extended strand; if any. Note: Camber is to be taken on 100% of production.
- Record post-pour inspection and any Non-conformances and file; notify proper personnel for non-conformance.
- Check with shipping department for possible deliveries. Visually check product for shipment.
- Figure tension calculations for current production day; if any.
- Visually check condition of product and form and report any abnormalities to proper personnel.
- Check layout for accuracy of dimensions and hardware for current production day.
- Check and count bottom reinforcement for spacing and accuracy.
- Assist production supervisor in strand placement and tensioning, checking elongations and final force.
- Record elongations on Tensioning report.
- Check and count all other reinforcement and check all hardware after installation for accuracy.
- Check product for clearance and recheck for cleanliness.
- Verify product is secure and level for concrete placement.
- During Placement: Prepare concrete specimens, test and perform slump, air content and temperature per beam; unless otherwise noted. NOTE: Quality Control is required to make no less than 4 cylinders per beam, unless otherwise noted by Quality Control Manager or by State requirements.
- Check and clean hardware, if any, after placement for accuracy.
- Check finish of product for acceptance.
- Coordinate with Plant Manager for correct pre-set and accelerated curing times.
- Put out necessary heat charts to monitor heat.
- Fill out paperwork; includes tension report, pre-pour inspection, steel sheet and information on slumps, all material certifications, air content and mix design on the concrete report.
- Inspect product from previous pour and green tag, to prepare for storage.
Safety
- Adhere to and endorse the company safety program by attending regularly scheduled meetings.
- Embrace a safety culture where all employees feel comfortable communicating safety concerns and bring any issues to management.
Other
- Assist the QC Manager in maintaining proper certifications and proper record keeping for PCI and State Audits.
- Responsible for the Final Inspections of their specific jobs and coordinating with the proper personnel on any imperfection or defect that may affect quality or affect the product from being shipped.
- Responsible for all other duties, roles and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor(s).
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Qualifications:
Ability to maintain an appropriate level of professionalism, and exhibit a manner of conduct consistent with promoting a good image for the company. Must keep certifications, and qualifications up-to-date through seminars, meetings, testing, training, etc. as necessary. Must be self-motivated and able to work independently with little to no supervision
Education/Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Must begin ACI and/ or PCI certification process based on scheduling by QC Manager. Failure to begin this process or an inability to become certified will disqualify candidates from retaining this position.
Certified ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I-
Certified PCI Quality Control Personnel Technician Level I&II
Prior experience in the Prestress/ Precast Concrete industry is a plus.
Computer Skills:
Basic computer knowledge including knowledge of email, MS Word, Excel and internet applications.
Language Skills:
This position requires the ability to read, write and speak English in order to prepare reports, give updates and prepare documentation.
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, volumes, percentages, area, radius, circumference and cost related to design. Develop skills to allow ability to read, analyze and interpret statistical data. Ability to apply concepts of basic math, algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions and determine solutions to resolve problems. Ability to interpret technical instructions in related subjects and determine resolutions. Demonstrate independence in problem solving and the ability to arrive at solutions that ensure the lowest unit cost meets short and long term commitments and business objectives.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals which require employee to wear proper personal protective equipment (PPE), outside weather conditions and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/ or humid/ cold conditions, as well as high, precarious places.
Employee will utilize proper PPE as instructed by supervisor, such as gloves, safety glasses, hard hats, reflective vests and steel toe boots. Additional PPE may be required.
