What are the responsibilities and job description for the Therapeutic Peer Mentor position at PRN for Families, Inc.?
PRN for Families, Inc. is a family outreach program working with young adults and families. We are currently seeking a candidate to be a peer mentor to a young man (early 20's) in the Gainesville, FL area. Strong preference will be given to those with an interest in the mental health field and who are currently enrolled in or are graduates of a social work or psychology graduate program, along with those with experience working in therapeutic or academic settings with young adults; however, training will be provided to a motivated individual. This position is also open to military personnel with a vested interest in working with young people. A six month commitment is preferred, although the position may or may not endure beyond that time frame. Supervision of the mentor by a licensed clinician will be provided face-to-face, as well as via video-conferencing and telephone.
Basic Job Description—Mentor:
- To provide companionship, guidance, and supervision; and to act as a positive role model to client.
- To assist with daily time management and organizational skills, to support development of healthy relationships, to act as an informal counselor and sounding board, to support efforts at healthy family communication skills, and to help in coordinating daily academic, practical, recreational, and social activities.
- To support the development of age-appropriate social skills and encourage balance between studying, social time, and time pursuing hobbies and healthy recreation.
- Prefer an individual who is knowledgeable about activities in the local community, who can build rapport easily, and who has an enthusiastic and motivational spirit.
- To assist PRN Family Consultant (therapist) in delivery of a therapeutic treatment plan, including activities that teach daily living skills, behavior modification, alternative coping skills and other skills as needed; this requires strong communication skills and commitment to communicate frequently and effectively.
- To work in collaboration with and in excellent communication with family members of the client, with other supports and/or mentors, the PRN Family Consultant, and others in all aspects of duties and responsibilities.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Ability to develop and maintain rapport with young adults and parents.
- Knowledge of and ability to be a calming presence, hold clear boundaries, and to utilize de-escalation skills.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Knowledge of and understanding of the HIPAA and federal confidentiality requirements.
- Prefer a candidate who is CPR and First Aid certified.
Hours/ Compensation:
Compensation is negotiable based on level of education (Bachelor's/Master's) and experience; it is likely that both daytime and evening hours and some weekend availability may be required. Time commitment is expected to be between 10 and 15 hours per week.
