What are the responsibilities and job description for the R & D Engineering Co-op position at Protolabs?
Position Overview:
Support R&D Engineers in testing, data collection, analysis, modeling and simulation of manufacturing processes such as machining, injection molding and additive manufacturing.
Specific Duties Include:
- Utilize CAD and CAM software packages to generate basic part geometries and corresponding manufacturing processes
- Define and perform process and component tests
- Define and confirm new processes and establish process improvements
- Aggregate, organize, and analyze data
- Operating various manufacturing and/or test equipment
- Calibrating manufacturing and/or test equipment
- Documenting procedures and results
- Participate in problem analysis and solution development with other team members
- Learn engineering best practices in a team based setting from a team member mentor
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
- Some familiarity with manufacturing processes such as machining, injection molding and additive manufacturing
- Good mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability
- Proficiency using Excel, MSWord or equivalent
- Good understanding of statistics is helpful
- Strong work ethic
- Excellent communication skills
Education Requirements:
- Enrolled and in good standing in an undergraduate mechanical, aerospace or related engineering or physics program
Preferred Qualifications:
- GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Familiarity with CAD/CAM/CAE software
Physical Demands:
While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use a computer keyboard, monitor and mouse, telephone and printer; reach with hands, and arms, talk, see and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop or kneel and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Work Environment:
Indoors (A/C); nonsmoking; the majority of this job function is performed in an office setting requiring normal safety precautions. However, there may be job duties that require the employee to spend time in the manufacturing areas exposed to machinery and noise; eye protection occasionally required. Occasionally works in outside weather conditions. Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
