Description
Providence St. Joseph Health is calling a Coder, ASU to work remotely within our footprint states: AK, CA, MT, OR, TX and/or WA. This position has multiple openings.
Under the direction of the Coding Manager, the Coder appropriately assigns MS/DRG's, ICD, and CPT codes to all account types according to American Hospital Association (AHA) and Uniform Hospital Discharge Set (UHDDS) guidelines. This individual abstracts clinical data and assists in regular analyses of patient records. In addition, the Coder provides coding insight and answers coding related questions for other inquiring physicians and PSJH employees.
Responsibilities:
- Code patient charts for the Ambulatory Surgery Unit.
- Meet all regulatory guidelines and standards applicable in the coding industry reaching and maintaining department set productivity standards.
- Abstract into the database clinical and demographic data from patient medical record as required by state reporting requirements.
- Monitor and perform follow-up on un-coded accounts to ensure timely billing to ensure Revenue Cycle month-end billhold goal is met.
- Partner with the Case Managers or other applicable staff members and participate in CDI in order to assure proper and accurate documentation in patient records; query the physician when appropriate.
- Maintain up to date knowledge of the current changes of coding practices by reading source material, such as Coding Clinic, Medicare Newsletters, and other professional journals.
- Attend department meetings and attend/read all education workshops, Coding Round Table Meetings, or any other required meetings as determined by the Coding Manager.
- Track ongoing issues and escalate to the Coding Manager in a timely manner.
- Provide advisory on code selection and answer coding questions posed by physicians and PSJH employees.
- Follow PSJH compliance coding policies and guidelines.
Required qualifications:
- Completion of coding classes in AHIMA-certified coding program.
- Associate's Degree in Health Information Management or equivalent education/experience
- National Certification from American Academy of Professional Coders upon hire; or
- National Certified Coding Associate - American Health Information Management Association upon hire; or
- National Certified Coding Specialist - American Health Information Management Association upon hire; or
- National Certified Coding Specialist - Physician - American Health Information Management Association upon hire; or
- National Certified Documentation Improvement Practitioner - American Health Information Management Association upon hire; or
- National Certified Health Data Analyst - American Health Information Management Association upon hire; or
- National Registered Health Information Administrator - American Health Information Management Association upon hire; or
- National Registered Health Information Technician - American Health Information Management Association upon hire.
- 4 years CPT experience; and/or
- 1-4 years ICD-10-CM/PCS acute care hospital coding experience.
- Experience in other clinical or healthcare disciplines.
Preferred qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Health Information Management or equivalent education/experience.
