G E NERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES : The assistant principal is responsible for supporting the principal with administering and supervising the total school program by establishing high expectations student achievement; building a positive school climate that supports the whole student; leveraging research and data to drive initiatives and instruction; and building and developing a high-performing staff and leadership team to achieve the school's vision and goals. The assistant principal will support the principal in building collaborative partnerships with parents, community members, consultants, as well as, other internal/external resources and stakeholders to implement educational programs, capital improvements, systems reform, tools and other resources to accelerate student achievement.

S U P E RVISION RECEIVED : The assistant principal works under the general supervision of the building principal with latitude for the exercise of initiative and independent judgement; work is reviewed upon completion through conferences and reports for conformance to established policies, objectives, rules and regulations.

S U P E RVISION EXERCISED: Plans, coordinates, organizes, supervises and evaluates the work of an instructional, professional, technical and clerical staff.

Under the direction of the building principal, the assistant principal will:
  • Promote a widely shared institutional belief that every child deserves and can have expert instruction and that all team members must be advocates for students.
  • Set high performance goals for themselves and others despite instability and obstacles to success.Create a sense of urgency and takes immediate action to ensure early successes.Establish and monitor high standards for excellence with students, teachers, staff and other stakeholders.Align school resources and prioritizes activities to achieve maximum results based on vision and goals.Relentlessly focus school activities on student achievement.
  • Effectively plan and take action to achieve goals and objectives without direction.Consistently identify potential issues and obstacles and proactively take action to create and implement solutions.Formulate and execute on action plans despite ambiguity, obstacles or resistance.
  • Establish a culture of learning and achievement.Act consistently to influence others' thinking and behavior to achieve results.Communicate a clear vision of success and benefits to engage others.Identify and engage stakeholders (e.g. parents, community) to drive consensus, build trust and facilitate change.Influence others to take action and demands change.
  • Effectively build and organize adult teams to mirror vision and produce maximum results.Understand team strengths and gaps.Select assignments to build team capacity.Effectively delegate to others and engage team in decision-making.Encourage learning and consistently provides instruction, expectations, feedback and other developmental activities to encourage leadership and build capacity.Consistently inspire excellence and promote high morale.Quickly recognize patterns and trends related to school performance.Analyze complex information to formulate strategic vision and develop action plans.Identify appropriate metrics and uses qualitative and quantitative data to assess performance and drive goals and decision-making.Recognize cause and effect between instructional activities and results.Develop right balance of strategic and tactical plans to achieve immediate success while maintaining long-term vision.Develop effective processes to achieve desired results.Consistently take on challenging situations and believes in ability to effect change.Demonstrate strong commitment to others and present ideas with confidence.Take risks to achieve vision and goals, even if they deviate from the norm.Take personal responsibility for mistakes and learns from them, while consistently following up with analysis and corrective action.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT: Rhode Island Department of Education Certification Building Administrator K-12

  • Commitment to the mission and vision of PPSD and the relevance of job functions to that mission and vision

E DUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :

Education : Such as may have gained through a Master's degree from an accredited college or university with an emphasis in educational administration/leadership; and
E x perience : Such as may have been gained through a Minimum of five (5) years in teaching experience; Strong knowledge of curriculum, instruction, school operations, and pupil services; administrative residency in an urban school setting, preferred; experience in a teacher leadership position which provided the opportunities to engage in the following: lead collaborative data analysis, action planning, lesson study, and peer observation; lead and/or support school improvement planning; and/or coordinate school engagement activities; excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills

Or , any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.
