Job Summary
This position reports to the Manager - Claims and is responsible to investigate and defend PSEG when a third party alleges PSEG’s negligence caused large loss property damage, personal injuries and / or when third party tortfeasors cause large loss damage to PSEG property. As such, this position:
Protects the Company’s assets and self-insured retention by performing investigations involving General, Auto, and Property Damage liability claims, as well as Personal Injury claims which require field work as part of the investigation process.- Builds comprehensive investigation data and fact patterns by securing and evaluating company and non-company records (e.g., paper documents; electronic, computer-based files).
- Conducts interviews with customers, witnesses, internal clients, state/county/local officials, insurance company representatives, and other outside parties to obtain relevant facts.
- Maintains and applies working knowledge of PSE&G operating policies/standards and applicable tariffs, as well as civil and criminal statutes and case law to properly and promptly evaluate assigned matters.
- Uses proactive and pre-emptive tactics to protect PSEG’s workforce, property, critical infrastructure, public image, brand, and other tangible and intangible assets, (including PSEG’s self-insured retention), from harm, misuse, theft, diversion, false or unqualified claims.
- Responds to and handles to resolution customer complaint issues as requested by the utility, customer relations and/or governmental affairs.
Job Responsibilities
- Upon analysis and establishment of both liability and damages, evaluates financial and other risks to the company. Negotiates and resolves (Denial, Compromise, Reimbursement) these third party matters on behalf of PSEG within claim settlement authority.
- Prepares formal investigation reports for delivery to / action by senior management, e.g., Compliance Council members.
- Serves as ‘On-Duty Officer’ for emergencies and significant operating company matters, responding, when needed, to the field, on a 24/7/365 basis.
- Defends the Company and its employees and, when required, seeks recovery for losses resulting from third-party transgressions and for damage to the Company’s assets due to criminal acts, negligence, or violation of the Company’s Standards of Integrity.
- Assists utility clients in recovering costs incurred for the relocation of electric facilities and/or identify re-design options to avoid relocation costs.
Job Specific Qualifications
Required Qualifications, Competencies, Education or Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree and 2 years relevant experience, or without a degree, a minimum of 5 years’ experience performing the above primary duties and responsibilities with an emphasis on claims, or 5-8 years utility experience.
- Strong verbal, communication, interviewing, and negotiation skills.
- Accomplished writer, especially structured reports, memoranda, briefing papers.
- Computer skills: Intermediate ability with Microsoft Word. Experience in PowerPoint and Excel.
- Physical and emotional strength to work in hostile or unstructured situations, or under adverse conditions, including weather extremes, accident, fatality, conflagration and explosion scenes, and abnormal working hours.
- Candidate must foster an inclusive work environment and respect all aspects of diversity.
- Successful candidate must demonstrate and value differences in others' strengths, perspectives, approaches, and personal choices.
- Driver’s license in good standing in state of domicile.
- Successful background check, at regular intervals, including drug panel, credit, and motor vehicle record.
Desired Qualifications, Competencies, Education or Experience:
- Interpretative knowledge of the energy operating infrastructure.
- Industry certification in one of these fields: claims, law, insurance, security, audit, forensics [or substitution of a minimum 10 years of experience performing the above Primary Duties and Responsibilities].
- Fire Origin / Cause investigation experience.
- Interpretative knowledge of civil, criminal, and labor law.
