Job Summary
This position is directly responsible for the oversight of the day-to-day operations of the Corporate Claims team that primarily handles third party claims and financial recovery matters on behalf of the utility, PSE&G. The responsibilities of the position include claims management, staffing, performance management, personnel development and identification of processes to support and improve efficiency and performance. The position oversees a team of approximately 35 claims associates and directly reports to the Vice President, Deputy General Counsel, and Chief Litigation Counsel.
Job Responsibilities
- Manages a team engaged in handling third party personal injury and property damage claims, financial recovery claims, and claims related to facility relocation. This function oversees both litigated and non-litigated claims.
- Coordinates and directs investigations of and responses to incidents involving utility-related equipment where there is exposure to potential legal claims.
- Directs the preparation of communications on major incidents and investigations for internal and external stakeholders including the Company’s insurers as appropriate.
- Oversees the setting and adjustment of reserves and assists in providing settlement recommendations to the appropriate delegation of authority level.
- Directs the investigation and review of claims to ensure that settlement and payment of claims are in accordance with state and federal laws, tariffs and company practices and procedures.
- Supports the Chief Litigation Counsel and litigation in-house and outside counsel in defending litigated claims. Attends mediations, arbitrations and settlement conferences as the company’s representative with settlement authority. Serves as the representative for the company in litigation when necessary.
- Researches and resolves escalated claims and customer calls.
- Hires, mentors and develops claims associates including setting performance standards and monitoring performance.
- Tracks and analyzes claims-related metrics and data and proactively utilizes that data to advise the business on initiatives to prevent claims incidents;
- Directs the regular evaluation of all claims processes to identify best practices and technologies in order to continuously improve the PSEG claims program.
Job Specific Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of 10 years of experience in insurance claim industry, utility industry, or related field, conducting, documenting, and investigating claims; OR without a Bachelor’s Degree, 15 years of experience in insurance claim industry, utility industry, or related field, conducting, documenting, and investigating claims.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to synthesize the results of investigations and provide clear briefings to senior executives.
- Strong customer service focus and negotiation skills.
- Ability to exercise high degree of judgment and discretion.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience managing the activities of a team conducting investigations of claim matters.
