POSITION TITLE: Water Resources Technician I

CLASSIFICATION: Nonexempt

DEPARTMENT: Department of Natural Resources

SUPERVISOR: Water Quality Program Manager

GRADE: NE5

Position Summary:

Under general supervision of the Water Quality Program Manager conducts research, performs site investigations, water sampling and assists with various elements of the Water Resources Division Programs.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Collects hydrological data including groundwater data, water level readings, water quality data, stream flow data, Piezometer data and various other water related data throughout the Pueblo’s waters including rivers, ditches and ponds.
  • Assists in filing data, information and research projects that are related to water resources.
  • Organizes files, prepares purchasing forms, answers phone calls and emails.
  • Calibrates, maintains and properly stores water resources equipment.
  • Assists with community outreach and various other environmental educational events.
  • Provides support to Department of Natural Resources staff as needed.
  • Conducts internet-based research and compiles materials on water resources.
  • Assists with pond monitoring and planting, watering, weeding and garden maintenance.
  • Develops outreach materials including pamphlets, presentations, posters and information sheets for environmental education projects.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by conducting research, attending seminars, educational workshops, classes and conferences, conferring with representatives of contracting agencies and related organizations.
  • Contributes to a team effort and accomplishes related results as required.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School diploma or GED plus 1-year work experience in natural resource monitoring or management; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation including a motor vehicle check. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico driver’s license and be insurable under the Pueblo’s insurance.

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications:

  • Knowledge of Federal, State and agency laws, rules and regulations governing environmental laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of the techniques, methods and devices used to obtain samples for testing.
  • Skill in analyzing problems, projecting consequences, identifying solutions, and implementing recommendations.
  • Skill in operating various word-processing, spreadsheets, Piezometer software and database software programs.
  • Skill in preparing, reviewing, and analyzing operational and technical reports.
  • Ability to interact and maintain good working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to work with GIS/GPS and Hydro-Lab equipment.
  • Ability to interpret applicable federal, state, county and local laws, regulations, and requirements.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in verbal or written format.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to demonstrate excellence in everything, and continually seek improvement in results.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee occasionally is required to stand; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment:

Work is generally performed in an office setting with a moderate noise level and occasionally performed outdoors. Exposure to natural weather conditions and various dusts may occur while performing outdoor duties. Situations where safety-toe shoes, safety goggles, gloves, or protective face shields are needed may occur.
